Martin Guptill was unbeaten on 66 when New Zealand’s third one-day international against Sri Lanka was abandoned due to wet weather at Eden Park.
In a match already reduced to 43 overs a side, the opening batsman struck a quartet of fours and three maximums in 78 deliveries, sharing a second-wicket stand of 99 with Tom Latham.
But after Angelo Mathews took 3-21, the Black Caps’ innings was brought to a halt by rain with the score 145 for three in the 29th over.
Sri Lanka skipper Mathews won the toss and then picked up the prized wicket of Brendon McCullum for 28 in the eighth over.
McCullum’s exit partnered Guptill with Latham and the pair spent 19 overs together at the crease, either side of two lengthy rain delays, until Mathews struck again, bowling the latter for 42.
Ross Taylor came and went, Mathews trapping him lbw, before the elements arrived to prevent either side from moving 2-1 ahead in the seven-match series.
