South Africa consolidated their position at the top of the International Cricket Council Test rankings by wrapping up a 2-0 series victory over West Indies in Cape Town.

Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla put on an unbroken 73 to lead the hosts to an eight-wicket win which helped them secure their number one spot for April 1 and the Test mace.

The Proteas were never really in danger of faltering in their pursuit of a 124-run victory target, which they reached in the opening session on the final day of the third Test.

Resuming on nine for one, overnight pair Elgar and Francois du Plessis began cautiously, with Sulieman Benn beating the bat several times.

While Elgar settled into his stride, and even launched the gangly spinner for six, du Plessis departed for 14 after top-edging a rising ball from Benn to Jermaine Blackwood running from slip to gully.

At 51 for two, South Africa were by no means safe but du Plessis' wicket was as good as it got for the Windies as Elgar and Amla piled on the runs.

Elgar brought up his half-century with his sixth four and was unbeaten on 60 when South Africa captain Amla, who contributed 38 not out, brought the game to an end by smashing Marlon Samuels through the covers.
