Australia doubled their series lead over India in Brisbane thanks to Mitchell Johnson’s four blistering wickets and Chris Rogers’ smooth fifty.
Johnson’s quartet, including three in 11 personal deliveries, reduced the tourists, who posted a strong 408 in their first innings, to 224 all out.
Set 128 to make it 2-0 with two to play, Rogers helped the hosts to overcome any nerves, particularly for stand-in skipper Steven Smith who was man of the match for his hundred, with 55 at almost a run a ball from the top of the order.
India, resuming on 71 for one, suffered a blow before the start when Shikhar Dhawan was injured in the nets and had to retire not out on 21.
Virat Kohli therefore began the day alongside Cheteshwar Puajara but did not last long, soon playing on to Johnson.
Fired up, Johnson struck twice in his next over with short balls, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma the victims.
In the next Josh Hazlewood, who took his maiden Test five-for in the first innings, trapped Mahendra Singh Dhoni in front to leave India reeling.
Pujara saw Ravichandran Ashwin depart, bringing Dhawan back to the crease, before himself falling to Hazlewood for 43 just prior to lunch.
Dhawan raised a fifty shortly after and went on to 81 until going lbw to Nathan Lyon, who then ousted Varun Aaron in his next over.
Umesh Yadav resisted with two sixes and a pair of fours but Johnson had him caught behind for 30, competing figures of 4-61.
India needed early wickets and got them, Ishant Sharma snaring David Warner and Shane Watson caught behind in consecutive overs.
Rogers, often a steady accumulator, importantly eased along with 10 boundaries before becoming Ishant’s third victim on 55.
Three wickets in three overs, Smith run out for 28 either side of Yadav accounting for Shaun Marsh and Brad Haddin, briefly delayed victory.
However, it soon came, by four wickets, when Mitchell Marsh sweetly cover-drove Aaron for four.
