Hashim Amla converted his century into a double and Stiaan van Zyl marked his debut with a ton of his own as South Africa piled on the runs on day two of the first Test against West Indies at Centurion.

Amla took his overnight 133 to 208, his third double-hundred, and van Zyl weighed in with an unbeaten 101 as the tourists’ attack, minus the injured Kemar Roach, was again put to the sword in a 155-run partnership.

As soon as van Zyl moved to three figures, shortly after Amla holed out off Sulieman Benn for the highest score by a South Africa skipper on home soil, the Proteas declared on a mammoth 552 for five.

Rain washed out the final session, delaying the Windies’ reply against Dale Steyn and co until tomorrow.

Dinesh Ramdin’s side at least ended Amla and AB de Villiers’ 308-run stand in the eighth over with the new ball today as the latter skewed Benn to point to depart for 152.

But again their hopes were dashed as Amla found another willing partner in van Zyl, who was dropped early on.

The 27-year-old, on two, was put down by Kraigg Brathwaite at short-leg off Benn.

Amla was also given a reprieve, by Jermaine Blackwood at midwicket, and then a flick through square-leg off Sheldon Cottrell moved him to 200.

In search of quick runs he eventually departed, caught on the long-off rope off Benn, before calling time on his side’s innings after van Zyl eased to a century, off 129 deliveries.
