Peter Moores has confirmed that Eoin Morgan will captain England in Sunday's fourth one-day international following Alastair Cook’s suspension for a slow over-rate.

Cook received a one-match ban for maintaining a slow over-rate during England’s five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Hambantota yesterday .

Moores backed Morgan to overcome a tricky period, saying: "Eoin Morgan will captain the next game. He's a good player, crikey.

"He'll have been through periods when he's not quite hitting it (as he'd like). But he's the sort of player we're very excited about.

"The key is to believe in yourself, and go out and play - and Eoin will do that, I'm sure."

Reflecting on Cook’s suspension, Head Coach Moores revealed his sympathy for the captain, who made 34 in England’s reply yesterday.

He said: "It's a shame for Alastair. I thought he played beautifully last night... he timed the ball really well.

"But one thing is that it cleans the slate for him, before we go to a World Cup - because he had that ban hanging over him.”

England head to Colombo for the fourth ODI against Sri Lanka having pulled it back to 2-1 in the series.
