An opening partnership of 158 between Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque laid the platform for Bangladesh to beat Zimbabwe by 68 runs and move 2-0 ahead in the five-match one-day international series.
The hosts were in danger of failing to build on the impressive stand, in which Tamim and Anamul contributed 76 and 80 respectively, until Mominul Haque’s unbeaten 33 lifted the Tigers to 251 for seven in Chittagong.
That proved more than enough as Mashrafe Mortaza and Arafat Sunny did the damage with the ball, either side of a half-century from Solomon Mire, as Zimbabwe were dismissed for 183 inside 45 overs.
Tamim and Anamul stayed together for 33 overs after Bangladesh had won the toss, setting a base from which their side could build on.
However, the former’s run-out triggered a collapse that saw four wickets, including in-form Shakib Al Hasan for a golden duck, fall for just 15 runs.
Mushfiqur Rahim added 27 before Mominul struck three fours in his 23-ball innings to give Bangladesh momentum.
Zimbabwe were always up against it in their chase as Mortaza, in his second game as skipper, ripped out their top-three batsmen inside the opening eight overs.
When Sunny collected his first scalp, that of Brendan Taylor, the tourists were struggling on 50 for four.
Mire provided some stern resistance, though, adding 65 with Regis Chakabva who made 32.
But the right-hander’s departure for 50 from 79 balls was the final straw for Zimbabwe, whose innings was emphatically wrapped up when Sunny took three wickets in the 45th over to complete figures of 4-29.
