Communications between on-field and TV umpires are set to be broadcast during the upcoming one-day international series between Australia and South Africa.

The International Cricket Council has given the green light for the ground-breaking trial, with a view to use it during the World Cup.

Australian host broadcaster Channel Nine will be able to air communication between the umpires during the decision-making process for reviewed appeals.

An ICC statement said the trial, which will begin in Friday’s opening match at the WACA Ground in Perth, had been introduced in order to “make umpiring more understandable to viewers and spectators”.

Geoff Allardice, ICC – general manager – cricket, added: “For years viewers have enjoyed seeing the same pictures as the TV umpire and making their own decisions during a referral or review.

“Now they will be even closer to the game, hearing what the umpire is saying when making those decisions.”

After the five-match series concludes the ICC said it might consider “extending this to select matches during the Cricket World Cup 2015”.
