Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan both struck centuries as India started their five-match one-day international series against Sri Lanka with a comprehensive 169-run victory at Cuttack.

Rahane and Dhawan, with 111 and 113 respectively, shared an opening stand of 231 in 35 overs to set the platform for India to rack up 363 for five, making the tourists regret their decision to field.

Ishant Sharma then took 4-34 to help dismiss Sri Lanka, touring India after West Indies pulled out, for just 194 inside 40 overs.

Rahane and Dhawan, who were both dropped by Kumar Sangakkara, started cautiously before freeing their arms after the 20-over mark, hitting 27 fours and five sixes between them.

The former won the race to a century, from 99 balls, while his partner required three fewer deliveries to complete the milestone, but the pair both departed in quick succession.

Dhawan was bowled after an attempted sweep off Ashan Priyanjan ricocheted off his pad and Rahane struck a Suraj Randiv full-toss straight to mid-off.

However, the duo’s departures refused to stop India as Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli added 52 in six overs.

Raina passed 5,000 ODI runs in his 200th game en route to a 34-ball 54 while skipper Kohli contributed 22 before they were victims for Randiv, playing his first ODI in three years.

Ambati Rayudu hit a trio of fours in his 27 and late cameos from Wriddhiman Saha and Akshar Patel lifted India to an imposing total.

Sri Lanka were always up against it and their cause was not helped when they lost their top three of Upul Tharanga, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Sangakkara to pace inside 17 overs.

When spinner Patel accounted for Seekkuge Prasanna and Mahela Jayawardene, the latter for a top score of 43, Sri Lanka were teetering on 130 for five.

After captain Angelo Mathews was taken at midwicket off Raina, Ishant ran through the lower order and then took the catch at long-on that sealed the match, handing Umesh Yadav a second scalp.

The only negative for India was an injury to paceman Varun Aaron, who suffered a leg problem during his 4.1-over spell.
