Somerset all-rounder Peter Trego has warned that his best is still to come after signing a contract extension to keep him at Taunton until 2016.
The 33-year-old has dutifully served his home county since 2000 – scoring more than 10,000 runs and taking almost 500 wickets – but feels his work is far from done.
Last season he took 49 first-class wickets - the second best return of his career – while he scored 1,302 runs in all competitions.
“I am absolutely delighted with the way that I have been playing, I think my consistency is improving year in, year out,” said Trego, who had been awarded a benefit year next season.
“I train hard in the gym and I am feeling really fit and strong. Actually I feel that at 33 years of age I haven’t hit my straps yet and I’m really excited for the next few years.
“I’m delighted that my skills will be on show with Somerset at the County Ground in Taunton.”
Trego’s new deal has been one of the first pieces of business done by new director of cricket Matthew Maynard, who said: “Over the years Pete Trego has played a key role in the team at Somerset in all forms of the game and I am delighted that he has signed an extension to his contract.
“I have seen Pete in action on a number of occasions both as a player and as an opposition coach so I know that he is a real team man and fiercely competitive.
“Now I look forward to having him on my side.”
