A stunning West Indies collapse handed India a 48-run win in the second one-day international in Delhi.

The Windies lost their final eight wickets for 45, after opener Dwayne Smith’s 97 had seemingly put them firmly on track to go 2-0 up in the five-match series.

The tourists had coasted to 170 for two but with victory, and Smith’s century, within sight the game swung full circle.

Mohammed Shami bowled Smith via a deflection off his pad, the second of the right-armer’s four wickets, to begin a procession of  batsmen back to the Feroz Shah Kotla pavilion.

West Indies opener Dwayne Smith's departure for 97 prompted a stunning collapse to allow India to level the series at 1-1

The Windies’ demise was accelerated in the 43rd over when Andre Russell was stumped, after some smart work by Mahendra Singh Dhobni, before Darren Sammy was bowled attempting a swipe at Ravindra Jadeja.

Shami finished the comeback when he ran across to midwicket to hold a top-edge from Ravi Rampaul off his own bowling and confirm match-best figures of 4-36.

Left-arm spinner Jadeja returned 3-44 while fellow slow bowler Amit Mishra took 2-40.

India earlier managed 263 for seven with Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli both hitting 62 as they embarked on a 105-run fourth-wicket partnership, the only significant stand of the innings.

Dhoni added a typically quickfire unbeaten 51, from 40 balls, at the end which proved invaluable when West Indies lost their way.

The tourists suffered a further blow after the match when it was confirmed they had been fined for a slow over rate.

The Windies were two overs short meaning the players were docked 20 per cent of their match payment, with skipper Dwayne Bravo's sanction doubled.

Bravo will also be handed a one-game ban if his team is found guilty of the offence again in the next 12 months.

The third match of the series is at Visakhapatnam on Tuesday.
