Somerset have extended the contract of highly promising left-arm spinner George Dockrell through to the end of next season.

The Ireland international first joined Somerset in 2010 and made his debut for the county in the Caribbean T20 the following year, when he was also given his first appearances in the County Championship.

In just his second match, he took what is still a career-best 6-27 against Middlesex and, while he only claimed 21 scalps this term at an average of 35.76, he has been earmarked for success for some time.

George Dockrell is relishing the chance to shine under new director of cricket Matthew Maynard at Somerset after extending his contract

The 22-year-old Dubliner has already played 39 one-day and 26 Twenty20 internationals for Ireland, with whom he will be hoping to play a key role at next year's World Cup.

Following the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, Dockrell is relishing the chance to shine under new director of cricket Matthew Maynard.

Dockrell said: "I'm delighted to have extended my contract with the club. I am really looking forward to next season and hopefully bringing some silverware back to Taunton."
