Adam Rossington has joined Northamptonshire on a two-year deal after Middlesex agreed to release him from his contract 12 months early.

The 21-year-old, a product of Middlesex’s youth system, found first-team opportunities hard to come by at Lord’s, making 37 appearances since his debut in 2010.

Behind first-choice gloveman John Simpson in the pecking order, Rossington spent half of this season on loan at Northants.

And the wicketkeeper-batsman enjoyed a fruitful spell at Wantage Road, especially in LV= County Championship cricket.

He hit a century and two fifities en route to compiling 440 runs in six matches, topping the club’s averages with 44.

Rossington, who also contributed 371 runs in 13 limited-overs games, said: "I would like to thank Middlesex and Angus Fraser for allowing me to leave my contract a year early.

“It's never an easy decision to leave the club you have played at since you were six but I feel it's the right move for me at this moment in time in order to play first-team cricket on a regular basis.

“I'd like to pass on my thanks to all the players I have played with and I'd also like to thank Mark Ramprakash, Jack Russell and everyone at the Academy for all their time and effort over the years.

“Finally, my thanks go to all the fans and personal kit sponsors for their support. I wish Middlesex all the best."

Rossington’s move comes on the same day as Middlesex cancelled the final year of Gareth Berg’s contract.

Middlesex managing director of cricket Angus Fraser added: "It is sad for the club when a product of its own youth system moves on to another county but John Simpson remains Middlesex's number-one keeper, which has not allowed Adam the exposure to first XI cricket he is looking for.

“Adam is an extremely talented young cricketer and we all hope his career blossoms and he fulfils his potential at Northants."

Meanwhile, Middlesex have also released all-rounder Ollie Wilkin after a shoulder injury limited the 22-year-old to a handful of second XI games this season.

Fraser said: "Releasing a young cricketer is never easy, especially a homegrown player with a lot of potential.

“Ollie gave glimpses of what he was capable of producing in the four first XI games he played for the club. In those matches he claimed six wickets and scored useful runs.

“Unfortunately his shoulder issues have prevented him from playing any meaningful cricket this summer.

“It was a situation that was getting him down. I hope these problems can, in time, be overcome and that Ollie can continue playing cricket at a high level."
