Coverage from the penultimate day in the final round of the 2014 LV= County Championship when Hampshire sealed the Division Two title and Lancashire and Middlesex took their survival battle to the wire.
By Callum Dent, Will Jackson & Dominic Farrell
6pm - Here we go, ladies and gentlemen. Join us tomorrow for the final day of a pulsating season.
Middlesex are 202 for four in their second innings, leading Lancashire by 114. Earlier, Red Rose skipper Glen Chapple produced memorable heroics with the bat to keep their survival hopes alive at Emirates Old Trafford.
Yorkshire are 148 for two, trailing Somerset by 36 runs in their second innings at Headingley. Gary Ballance has 50 not out for the champions.
Sussex are leading by 283 on 209 for three against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. Visiting opener Luke Wells has continued his purple patch to move to 91 not out.
Warwickshire gained revenge for their Royal London One-Day Cup final defeat with an emphatic innings-and-13-run win over Durham. Keith Barker and Jeetan Patel took three wickets apiece at Edgbaston.
Hampshire claimed the Division Two title with a 291-run win over Glamorgan at the SWALEC Stadium. James Tomlinson took a six-wicket haul for the visitors, repeating Jim Allenby’s feat before Hampshire’s declaration earlier in the day.
Essex thrashed already-promoted Worcestershire by an innings and 92 runs at the Essex County Ground. Graham Napier took 5-54 for the hosts but Hampshire’s win meant Essex missed out on promotion and Worcestershire were denied the title.
Derbyshire sealed a fourth-place finish with a county record 408-run victory over winless Leicestershire. Ben Slater cracked his second century of the match before seamer Mark Footitt ended a brilliant season with 5-34.
Kent are 95 for four and need an unlikely 353 more to beat Gloucestershire, for whom Alex Gidman scored a farewell 140 at the Spitfire Ground.
5.34pm - That’s a wrap folks. The covers are coming on at Manchester and Hove. We’ll have a close of play summary with you shortly.
Play abandoned for the day.
— Yorkshire CCC (@Yorkshireccc) September 25, 2014
5.25pm - Bad light also halts play at the Spitfire Ground, where Sam Northeast and Darren Stevens have combined in a restorative partnership.
That could be our last action of the day as stumps are drawn at Wantage Road.
5.17pm - And despite floodlights and the presence of spin at both ends, the umpires have decided the Manchester murk is too severe. Middlesex head inside on 202 for four, 114 ahead, with Morgan 41 not out. I wouldn’t bank on them returning before the close.
5.14pm - ecb.co.uk’s Matt Somerford at Lancashire (302/8d) v Middlesex (214 & 202/4): Dexter took 50 balls to get off the mark. It was almost worth the wait as he flicked Croft away for four. Middlesex are sucking the life out of this and you can hardly blame them. Nine overs left today and the lead by 114.
MILESTONE! Mark Footitt ends season with 82 #LVCC wickets, the most for Derbyshire since Geoff Miller in 1984 #P2bDpic.twitter.com/e8eI4q917z

5pm - Bad light has also interfered with the action at Northampton - a particular frustration for Sussex opener Luke Wells, who is nine shy of three figures.
4.54pm - The players are off for bad light at Headingley.
4.49pm - DROPPED! Perhaps it’s not just the Middlesex batsmen struggling with the light at Emirates Old Trafford - Paul Horton fails to grab a regulation chance at first slip that would have seen the returning Chapple remove Dexter for a duck.
4.46pm - ecb.co.uk's Matt Somerford at Lancashire (302/8d) v Middlesex (214 & 188/4): The light is starting to deteriorate and Junaid has just pinned Neil Dexter with a bouncer that he played like he never saw it. Junaid's decision to follow it up with another bouncer was probably not the best way to mount a case to remain out there. Simon Kerrigan and Steven Croft may be relied upon for the majority of the 18 overs left today.
4.44pm - Sam Billings is bowled by Liam Norwell and Kent appear to be fading fast on 57 for four.
Gary Ballance is through to 50.
4.32pm - Two wickets in as many overs for Gloucestershure. David Payne gets in on the act by trapping Brendan Nash in front for 14 and Kent are 44 for three.
4.27pm - ecb.co.uk’s Matt Somerford at Lancashire (302/8d) v Middlesex (214 & 180/4): Junaid Khan's first wicket of the game will be one that Lancashire will have in the back of their minds when it comes to their turn to bat. It reared up at Dawid Malan and took his glove/handle on the way through to Steven Croft. Middlesex's lead is 92.
After 10 overs Kent 40/2 Bell-Drummond lbw b Miles 5 Cowdrey b Miles 16 #KENvGLO
— Kent Cricket (@kentcricket) September 25, 2014
4.22pm - RESULT! Derbyshire (289 & 372/3d) beat Leicestershire (141 &112) by 408 runs. Derbyshire end what has been an at times trying season in emphatic style. Mark Footitt completed 5-34 before Durston trapped Atif Sheikh lbw to complete the rout. Ben Raine was left 33 not out and, all too comfortably, Leicestershire’s top scorer.
4.19pm - Just when it looked like Morgan and Malan were building a very useful partnership, Junaid Khan has got one to lift off a length and remove the latter for 39. Malan could only loop an absolute snorter to Steven Croft at second slip.
Meanwhile, Adam Lyth’s sensational championship season of 1,489 runs ends as he mis-times a pull off Peter Trego to mid-on. He scored 51 of those today.
4.11pm - Wes Durston bowls James Sykes for eight and Derbyshire are two wickets away.
50 for Lyth off 85 balls with 8x4s. 114-1
— Yorkshire CCC (@Yorkshireccc) September 25, 2014
4.08pm - ecb.co.uk's Matt Somerford at Lancashire (302/8d) v Middlesex (214 & 172/3): After Glen Chapple was trending on Twitter earlier this morning I can confirm that, as Middlesex have settled, Jason Orange has moved back above the Lancashire skipper in the Twitterverse rankings. That's a shame. Chapple could himself be about to call time on a long-term career and, at three years Orange's junior, who knows what his future holds...
4.04pm - Kent are 19 for one chasing a nominal 448 to beat Gloucestershire after Craig Miles traps Daniel Bell-Drummond lbw.
3.59pm - It’s a positive start from Eoin Morgan and Dawid Malan for Middlesex after tea. The first two overs cost 18 and the visitors lead moves to 71.
3.55pm - Final sessions of day three in the five remaining matches are under way across the country. This one could be the most pivotal of the lot at Emirates Old Trafford. Not the first time that’s been said this week, admittedly.
Great way to finish the season with a win. Great to enjoy a couple of brews with this legend. @NickBrowne4#Eeeeaglespic.twitter.com/eo4XFolZH1
— Jesse Ryder (@DijaRyder) September 25, 2014
3.37pm - Leicestershire’s woes continue, with Wayne White in on the act against his old club. Rob Taylor departs bowled and it’s 76 for seven. The wicket heralds tea and Derbyshire look like wrapping things up quickly upon the resumption.
Life for Ballance, dropped on 24 by Overton off Leach, sweeping, top edge to long-leg area. 94-1 in 29th.
— Yorkshire CCC (@Yorkshireccc) September 25, 2014
3.24pm - Kerrigan draws a false shot from Joe Denly, who looks to leave one but it comes straight off the face of the bat and drops into the hands of slip.
Gloucestershire lose their final wicket on the stroke of tea to set Kent 448 to win.
WICKET! Six down! Wells is lbw to @Cotts1993 for 13. Leicestershire 51-6 (13.4); Raine 1*. #4moretogo for Derbyshire #DERvLEI
— Derbyshire CCC (@DerbyshireCCC) September 25, 2014
3.11pm - RESULT! Warwickshire (429) beat Durham (201 & 215) by an innings and 13 runs. Ryan Pringle is the last man to fall as the Bears extract revenge for Saturday's defeat in the Royal London One-Day Cup Final.
3.04pm - Chris Rushworth goes cheaply which means Warwickshire are on the verge of an innings victory against Durham.
3.01pm - There will be no 10-for at Derby either, as Tony Palladino takes the fifth Leicestershire wicket in just the 10th over.
It looks like Hampshire have beaten the trophy to the SWALEC Stadium, which means there will be wait before the presentation.
Commiserations to @EssexCricket Their tally of 229 points is the most ever gained by a side who have not been promoted

2.53pm - RESULT! Hampshire (357 & 258/9d) beat Glamorgan (172 and 152) by 291 runs to win Division Two. Imran Tahir takes the last wicket to seal a big win for Hampshire which secures their promotion to the First Division as champions.
Footitt has claimed a fourth wicket at the 3aaa County Ground while Jeetan Patel accounts for Mark Wood.
2.50pm - ecb.co.uk’s Matt Somerford at Lancashire (302/8d) v Middlesex (214 & 122/2): Sam Robson's return to form ends with him wondering whether his luck might still actually be out. He pummelled a Simon Kerrigan long-hop to short cover where substitute fieldsman Liam Livingstone took a super catch over his head. Livingstone was only on the field after Steven Croft took a nasty blow at short-leg from a Dawid Malan sweep.
2.48pm - Donald has fallen for an aggressive 59, meaning Hampshire are just one wicket away from promotion and the Division Two title.
Disappointing finish to the season but a fantastic achievement to get promotion! Proud of all the lads efforts! Roll on 2015 #Div1#COYP
— Daryl Mitchell (@mitchwccc) September 25, 2014
2.38pm - Footitt strikes again to remove Ned Eckersley and Dan Redfearn, while Ed Joyce has fallen to Azharullah for 47 at Wantage Road.
17-year-old Aneurin Donald has hit a maiden first-class half-century to hold up Hampshire's celebrations.
2.25pm - Alex Lees is done for the season after he is caught at the wicket for 23 with Yorkshire still a long way in arrears.
100 - Mark Footitt has become the 2nd player after Jeetan Patel to take 100 county wickets in 2014 (all competitions). Fleet. @DerbyshireCCC
— OptaJim (@OptaJim) September 25, 2014
2.18pm - No hat-trick for Griffiths but David Payne goes second ball to give the Kent paceman five wickets!
Chris Wood moves Hampshire to within touching distance of the Division Two title by dismissing Dean Cosker.
Wickets! Howell c †Billings b Griffiths 4 & Miles b Griffiths 0 Hat trick ball for Griff!
— Kent Cricket (@kentcricket) September 25, 2014
2.15pm - Leicestershire have lost a wicket in their first over, and no surprises that it is Mark Footitt who has the wicket.
2.08pm - ecb.co.uk’s Matt Somerford at Lancashire (302/8d) v Middlesex (214 & 78/0): Sam Robson cuts Glen Chapple to the point rope to bring up his first half-century since the first Investec Test against India in early July. He averaged 16.45 in 11 innings in between time. It is a timely return to form for Middlesex, who have almost erased that 88-run defict now.
2.03pm - Tom Bailey isn't having a bad day at all for Lancashire. He hit some vital runs and has made the first breakthrough, dismissing Chris Rodgers with his side still marginally ahead.
Gareth Breese walks off the pitch for the finally time as a Durham player after he is dismissed by Keith Barker.
100 NOT OUT! @cheteshwar1 completes his 27th first-class century off 115 balls (15 fours, 1 six)! #BattedPuj! #P2bDpic.twitter.com/FOTnLpvp14
— Derbyshire CCC (@DerbyshireCCC) September 25, 2014
2.00pm - Derbyshire have declared and set a target of 521 for Leicestershire to win after Cheteshwar Pujara reaches his first century for the club.
1.57pm - There will be no 10-wicket haul for Tomlinson:
Wagg (14) has played on off the bowling of Coles & Glamorgan are 86-7. #ThreeToGo#LVCC
— Hampshire Cricket (@hantscricket) September 25, 2014
1.50pm - Alex Gidman's finally innings for Gloucestershire is brought to an end by Claydon, but not before he made an excellent 140 which looks to have put the game beyond the reach of Kent.
Rikki Clarke pulls off a stunning one-handed catch in the slips to see off Paul Collingwood.
Essex have beaten Worcestershire at Chelmsford which means Hampshire will be #LVCC Division Two champions if they can win here. #LVCC
— Hampshire Cricket (@hantscricket) September 25, 2014
1.340pm - RESULT! Essex (431) beat Worcestershire (84 & 255) by an innings and 92 runs. Jamie Porter takes the final wicket but promotion looks highly unlikely now for Essex, while Worcestershrie will still be going up but in second place if Hampshire wrap up their victory.
Elsewhere Mitchell Claydon has a third victim in Ian Cockbain.
Wicket Richardson run out by Porterfield backing up for 17 Durham 125-4
— Warwickshire CCC (@CricketingBears) September 25, 2014
1.38pm - Ravi Bopara has dismissed Jack Shantry for 38 but what looks like a stunning Essex victory looks to be in vain as Tomlinson takes his and Hampshire's sixth wicket.
1.30pm - ecb.co.uk’s Matt Somerford at Lancashire (302/8d) v Middlesex (214 & 40/0): Chris Rogers is really battling against himself at the moment. Perhaps he is feeling the weight of that decision to bat first now that this relegation fight is on level terms. He's been dropped twice in scoring seven from 43 balls. Four of those runs came from a nick through the slip cordon in the previous over from the luckless Junaid Khan.
Rashid finishes cleaning up the Somerset tail as he gets Craig Kieswetter stumped for 17, giving them a lead of 184 runs.
Five wickets for James Tomlinson! He's trapped Lloyd (1) lbw & Glamorgan are now 56-5. #FiveToGo#LVCC
— Hampshire Cricket (@hantscricket) September 25, 2014
1.15pm - Adil Rashid has Tim Groenewald and Alfonso Thomas both caught by Jack Leaning at short leg as Yorkshire strike after the break.
The Hampshire victory march is well under way as James Tomlinson takes his fourth wicket; trapping Will Bragg lbw for 25.
At lunch, Jim Allenby is 12* and needs a further 32 runs to join Will Bragg on 1,000 f/c runs for the 2014 season.
— Glamorgan Cricket (@GlamCricket) September 25, 2014
12.55pm - As promised, here are the scores from around the grounds.
Middlesex are 30 without loss in their second innings, trailing by 58, after Glen Chapple and Tom Bailey helped Lancashire declare on 302 for eight and keep their survival hopes alive at Emirates Old Trafford.
Somerset are 426 for seven, 173 runs ahead of champions Yorkshire at Headingley.
Sussex are leading by 98 on 24 for one after Steven Magoffin took 5-51 to dismiss Northamptonshire, for whom Rob Keogh made 129, for 294 at Wantage Road.
Durham are struggling on 104 for three, still 124 runs in arrears, after Chris Rushworth’s 6-100 dismissed Warwickshire for 429 at Edgbaston.
Hampshire require seven more wickets to secure promotion to Division One after James Tomlinson’s triple strike reduced Glamorgan, in pursuit of 444 to win, to 54 for three. Jim Allenby earlier completed figures of 6-54 as the visitors declared on 258 for nine.
Essex continue to keep the pressure on second-placed Hampshire. Graham Napier’s five wickets leaves Worcestershire 238 for eight, still 109 runs adrift at the Essex County Ground.
Alex Gidman, in his final outing before joining Worcestershire, has 113 of Gloucestershire’s 313 for four, 328 ahead of Kent at the Spitfire Ground.
Derbyshire, on 290 for three, are leading Leicestershire by a mammoth 438 courtesy of Ben Slater’s second century of the match and an unbeaten fifty from Cheteshwar Pujara at the 3aaa County Ground.

— OptaJim (@OptaJim) September 25, 2014
12.31pm - ecb.co.uk’s Matt Somerford at Lancashire (302/8d) v Middlesex (214 & 30/0): It has been a disappointing morning for Middlesex but their openers have regrouped well to see them to lunch without loss. Rogers was, however, given two lives before surviving a big bat-pad shout in the final over before the break off Simon Kerrigan. They trail by 58.
We will round up the scores for you shortly.
12.29pm - Tomlinson has a third, trapping Chris Cooke lbw, and Hampshire look to be romping to promotion. Glamorgan are 41 for three.
Derbyshire's Slater and Somerset's Peter Trego both lose their wickets.
12.22pm - Just like he did in the Royal London One-Day Cup final, Patel is hurting Durham. He has a second as Varun Chopra takes the catch to end Stoneman's innings of 45, leaving the visitors to Edgbaston 150 behind on 78 for three.
Tomlinson is denied a hat-trick.

Gidman is signing off his Gloucestershire career in style by making a ton.
100 NOT OUT! @BennySlats hits his second hundred of the match! Only 15th Derbyshire player to achieve the feat! Derbyshire 259-2 #DERvLEI
— Derbyshire CCC (@DerbyshireCCC) September 25, 2014
12.08pm - ecb.co.uk’s Matt Somerford at Lancashire (302/8d) v Middlesex (214 & 8/0): After the excitement of that first hour we can all have a deep breath now and get ourselves calm again. Well, all of us except for Chris Rogers and Sam Robson, who must now try and put Middlesex's disappointment aside and begin erasing Lancashire's 88-run advantage. Rogers must be wondering what might have been had he elected to bowl first.
Jeetan Patel is at it again. The off-spinner breaks Durham's second-wicket stand by having Borthwick caught behind.
Sussex, leading by 90, lose a first wicket as Nash is dismissed by Muhammad Azhar Ullah.
12.06pm - Mark Stoneman and Scott Borthwick share a fifty partnership at Edgbaston.
India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara moves to a half-century for Derbyshire, who are 404 runs ahead of winless Leicestershire.
WICKET - Hildreth is out bowled by Patterson for 7. Somerset are 373/6. Trego and Kieswetter at the crease now.
— Somerset Cricket (@SomersetCCC) September 25, 2014
11.52am - England international Moeen misses out on a century as Napier makes him his fifth victim.
Northants concede a first-innings deficit of 74 after Chris Nash ousts Rob Keogh for 129 to dismiss the hosts for 294 at Wantage Road.
11.49am - Another double strike from Napier leaves Worcestershire seven down. This time he accounts for Ben Cox and Joe Leach in consecutive deliveries. Moeen is 98 not out.
11.41am - Somerset are 364 for five, leading by 111, when Steven Patterson has Jack Leach caught behind by Jonny Bairstow.

11.24am - ecb.co.uk’s Matt Somerford at Lancashire (289/8) v Middlesex (214): It's down to a Twenty20 scenario to decide Lancashire's championship fate! They need 11 runs from 18 balls, with the knowledge that a wicket would also send them down. Wow.
Glamorgan seamer Allenby has Chris Wood caught for his fourth scalp.

11.14am - Graham Napier is hurrying Essex's pursuit of victory. After dismissing Alexei Kervezee lbw, the paceman accounts for Tom Kohler-Cadmore in similar fashion. Worcestershire are now 137 for five.
Victory at the Essex County Ground will prove in vain though if Hampshire win at Cardiff. They are in control 407 runs ahead. James Vince is the latest to go for 48 and a declaration could be imminent.
WICKET Alexei Kervezee is trapped in the crease by Graham Napier without score. 137 for 4. #EssvWor
— Essex Cricket (@EssexCricket) September 25, 2014
11.08am - ecb.co.uk’s Matt Somerford at Lancashire (284/8) v Middlesex (214): Tom Bailey, in his fourth championship match for Lancashire, has the weight of a county on his shoulders. He is going to have to face the majority of the deliveries to get Lancashire to 300 because Middlesex are allowing Glen Chapple a single when he's on strike.
Magoffin claims his fifth victim and Sussex are on the brink of securing a sizeable first-innings lead. Northants are 97 behind with one wicket left after Graeme White departs for two.
Hampshire lose another, this time Adam Wheater is caught behind off Allenby, but they remain 407 ahead.
11.06am - David Masters starts promotion-chasing Essex's victory charge. The evergreen seamer breaches the defences of Tom Fell to end a stand of 82 with Moeen Ali and leave Worcestershire 211 runs behind on 136 for three.

— Warwickshire CCC (@CricketingBears) September 25, 2014
11.01am - Chris Rushworth's remarkable wicket-taking form continues. The seamer, who took 15 in a day last week, collects his sixth at Edgbaston when Oliver Hannon-Dalby edges behind.
10.58am - Steve Magoffin has a fourth scalp at Wantage Road when ousting New Zealander Neil Wagner.
Yorkshire have an important breakthrough at Headingley as Jack Brooks finds the edge of Tom Abell, who made 75.
118 - Tim Murtagh has 118 @LV_Cricket since the start of 2013, the third most behind Steve Magoffin and Michael Hogan. Spearhead.
— OptaJim (@OptaJim) September 25, 2014
10.54am - ecb.co.uk’s Matt Somerford at Lancashire (271/8) v Middlesex (214): Lancashire are a wicket away from being relegated. Murtagh has taken both wickets this morning - he's enjoying these cloudier conditions - and there is suddenly a spring in the step of the Middlesex players. Lancashire need 29 runs from nine overs to get to the bonus point they need.
Kent seamer Claydon strikes again, Hamish Marshall returning to the pavilion for a duck.
10.52am - Wickets are starting to tumble around the country now.
Ben Raine dismisses Derbyshire skipper Wayne Madsen for 69, Mitchell Claydon bowls Gloucestershire centurion Will Tavare and Hampshire's Tom Alsop departs to Jim Allenby.

10.45am - Lancashire lose their first wicket of the morning with the score on 269, Tim Murtagh trapping Luke Procter lbw.
Alex Gidman, who is joining Worcestershire, is enjoying a fine ending as a Gloucestershire player, moving to a half-century at the Spitfire Ground.
10.25am - ecb.co.uk’s Matt Somerford at Lancashire (259/6) v Middlesex (214): Lancashire begin the day in a strange position. After an hour they will either be relegated or in a very strong position to win the game and stay up. It might be an omen but on my drive over the Pennines to get here today the bright blues skies in Yorkshire gave way to murky gloom as I headed down the hill towards Rochdale. We shall see soon enough.
10.20am - Good morning and welcome to our LV= County Championship blog. The last round of 2014 games enter their penultimate day, standing as follows:
Lancashire, on 259 for six, need another 41 runs - in 14 overs - while denying Middlesex from taking three more wickets if they are to keep their survival hopes alive at Emirates Old Trafford.
Nick Compton struck 156 while Marcus Trescothick and Tom Abell contributed half-centuries, the latter’s unbeaten, as Somerset closed 66 runs ahead of champions Yorkshire on 319 for three at Headingley.
Varun Chopra and Jonathan Trott, who made 160 and 104 respectively, shared in a third-wicket stand of 191 as Warwickshire claimed the full allocation of bonus batting points needed to secure the runners-up spot in Division One. They resume on 413 for eight, 212 runs ahead of Durham at Edgbaston.
Rob Keogh has 104 of Northamptonshire’s 251 for seven, still 117 runs adrift of Sussex’s first-innings 368 at Wantage Road.
Hampshire are well placed to claim the win that secures promotion to the top flight at Cardiff. The visitors, for whom Jimmy Adams struck 91, lead by 360 on 175 for three after dismissing Glamorgan for just 172.
England international Moeen Ali’s unbeaten 70 held up promotion-chasing Essex’s victory charge. Worcestershire are 113 for two, still 234 runs adrift, after Jesse Ryder’s 120 not out lifted the hosts to 431 at the Essex County Ground.
After dismissing Kent for just 164, Will Tavare’s 101 not out gave Gloucestershire, on 208 for two, a lead of 223 at the Spitfire Ground.
Ben Slater and Wayne Madsen, with 73 and 66 not out respectively, took Derbyshire 310 runs in front on 162 for one against Leicestershire, who managed just 141 at the 3aaa County Ground.
