Seamer Chris Wood took four Glamorgan wickets as Hampshire strengthened their chances of gaining promotion from LV= County Championship Division Two on the second day of the final game of the summer at the SWALEC Stadium.

After being bowled out for 357 on the opening evening, second-placed Hampshire skittled the hosts for just 172 in 53.3 overs - 185 adrift after the first innings - with Wood recording figures of 4-42.

And - after deciding to not enforce the follow on - Hampshire reached 175 for three in their second innings by the close, to go into the third day with a healthy lead of 360 mainly thanks to 91 from 121 balls from skipper Jimmy Adams.

Glamorgan went into today looking to respond positively to Hampshire's 357 but Will Bragg went for a duck from the ninth ball of the day when he was bowled by Matt Coles.

Hampshire captain Jimmy Adams fell nine runs short of his second championship century of the season, but left his side in a good position

Mark Wallace and Jacques Rudolph looked to repair some of the damage but just after bringing up the 50 Wood grabbed two of his victims in the space of three balls. First he bowled Rudolph with a ball that swung into the South African and he followed that up by also breaking through Chris Cooke's defences.

Though Wallace and Jim Allenby looked fairly solid by lunch, which Glamorgan reached at 100 for three, the real damage was yet to be done. Allenby was caught by Will Smith in the gully off Wood, who followed that up by bowling Wallace just after the Glamorgan captain had reached a half-century from 111 balls. Two of the stumps were broken by that delivery.

At 119 for five it brought 17-year-old debutant Aneurin Donald to the middle but the A-level student could only make four before miscuing a pull to Imran Tahir at mid-on off Coles.

From 136 for six Glamorgan slumped to 139 for seven when David Lloyd pulled Coles to deep backward square. It was a sorry procession of wickets which strengthened Hampshire's promotion bid.

Mark Wallace made his way to 51 before he was bowled by Hampshire seamer Chris Wood, who went on to claim 4-42

South Africa leg-spinner Tahir celebrated a milestone when he took his 700 first-class wicket, trapping Dean Cosker lbw to leave the home side 158 for nine.

Graham Wagg's resistance ended when a bail was dislodged when attempting to cut Tahir before Michael Hogan edged James Tomlinson to Sean Ervine at first slip without scoring.

But Adams decided to bat again rather than enforce the follow on in a bid to take Glamorgan out of the game.

Hampshire's openers Smith and Adams piled on the agony for Glamorgan as they put on 79 for the opening wicket to take the visitors' lead to 264 before Smith went to a low catch to Wallace. Liam Dawson could only make five but Adams and James Vince rallied.

Adams batted very well but eventually perished in the pursuit of quick runs holing out to square-leg off Cosker nine short of his 100 in the penultimate over of the day.
