Moeen lands Birmingham award

England and Worcestershire all-rounder Moeen Alihas been voted Professional Sportsman of the Year as part of the annual Birmingham Sports Awards in recognition of his achievements during 2014.

The 27-year-old beat off competition from Birmingham Knights basketball captain Michael Gayle and British sprinter Danny Talbot, who were also nominated for the award.

Former Worcestershire paceman Neal Radford received the award on Moeen's behalf during a ceremony at Villa Park.

Birmingham-born Moeen, who was educated at Moseley School, has had a year to remember with club and country. He broke into the England side for the winter tour of the West Indies and the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.

Then Moeen played in all seven Investec Tests this summer and picked up 19 wickets in the five-match series victory over India in addition to scoring his maiden international century against Sri Lanka at Headingley.

Moeen also helped Worcestershire gain promotion to in the LV= County Championship, averaging over 60 with the bat from his seven appearances to date this season.

He has also been nominated for Professional Player of the Year at the inaugural Asian Cricket Awards.

The Birmingham Sports Awards celebrate and reward the outstanding achievements of Birmingham's exceptional sporting successes with there being 13 different categories.

Across professional and amateur sport in the area, disabled and non-disabled people are recognised, demonstrating to the wider community that Birmingham is home some of the most successful sporting talents and rising stars in the country today.
