Varun Chopra will take over as Warwickshire captain following the retirement of current skipper Jim Troughton through injury.
Chopra, 27, has led in the absence of Troughton for most of this season, helping the club to its first domestic Twenty20 title and to reach the final of the Royal London One-Day Cup, which takes place at Lord’s on Saturday.
Warwickshire director of cricket Dougie Brown said: “Varun has done an outstanding job as vice-captain and in deputising for Jim. His captaincy credentials have been proven by the team’s excellent results in recent months and he is the natural successor to lead the club.
“Whilst Jim’s injury has resulted in his premature retirement from the game, he remains a key member of the team management as we prepare for the Royal London Cup final at Lord’s and approach our final LV= County Championship match next week.”
Chopra joined Warwickshire ahead of the 2010 season and was part of the victorious championship side, led by Troughton, in 2012. He has scored 7,655 first-class runs, including 15 centuries, and has made 1,000 first-class runs in each of the last three seasons for Warwickshire.
