Bangladesh began day four facing an innings defeat to the West Indies - but ended it having given themselves some hope of saving the first Test.

Facing a first-innings deficit of 302 having been ripped out for 182 on day three in Kingstown, the Tigers dug in to reach 256 for five with captain Mushfiqur Rahim leading the way once again.

The wicketkeeper added an unbeaten 70 to his first-innings 48 not out and put on 130 with Mahmudullah. Although his side still trailed by 46 runs at stumps, his efforts meant the result was at least back in the balance in the first game of the two-match series.

Losing opener Shamsur Rahman in the fourth over, edging Kemar Roach to keeper Denesh Ramdin, was far from the ideal start but Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes put on a solid 70 for the second wicket.

Kayes dug in for 25 from 72 balls before inexplicably chipping Chris Gayle straight to short cover Kirk Edwards but Tamim hit the same bowler for his third six to bring up an 83-ball half-century and his team's hundred.

He lost partner Mominul Haque for 12 - caught behind off Sulieman Benn with the decision upheld on review, in an echo of his first-innings exit - and the gangly spinner then bowled Tamim through the gate for 53.

But the half-century partnership between Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah came up when the former swept Gayle for four.

Mahmudullah launched a six in the off-spinner's next over and brought up a 114-ball 50 - and the century partnership - by cutting Benn for four.

Mushfiqur followed from 122 balls with a paddle-sweep for four off Jermaine Blackwood but Mahmudullah was dropped by Edwards off the first ball of a new Gayle spell.

The partnership finally ended when Roach jagged one back in to Mahmudullah and his inside edge was brilliantly taken by a diving Ramdin. Mahmudullah hit seven fours and a six in 151 balls.

Mushfiqur and Nasir Hossain played out five maidens in the last seven overs of the day, the latter closing on seven not out.
