Joe Root treated his home crowd to a wonderful innings as England ended their disappointing Royal London One-Day Series against India on a high note with a 41-run victory in the fifth and final contest at Headingley.
Arriving at the crease at 39 for two in the seventh over, the Yorkshire batsman compiled a brilliant 113 off 108 balls, including 10 fours and a trio of sixes, to lift his side to 294 for seven.
The 23-year-old added 52 for the third wicket with Alastair Cook and then a swashbuckling 108 in just 13.3 overs with Jos Buttler.
That onslaught helped England post their biggest total of the five-match rubber and put the tourists under pressure that they struggled to deal with.
James Anderson and Moeen Ali hampered their chase with two wickets apiece and, after Ben Stokes snared three scalps, India were dismissed for 253 despite a stunning 87 off 68 deliveries from Ravindra Jadeja.
With the series already lost, England came out all guns blazing and paid for their attacking approach by losing two early wickets.
Alex Hales skied an attempted pull off Umesh Yadav straight to midwicket before Moeen, promoted to number three at the expense of Gary Ballance, tried to replicate two driven fours from a previous over but paid for a lack of foot movement and picked out third man.
Cook and Root found the boundary on regular occasions during their alliance, only for the introduction of India’s spinners to prove effective yet again.
Cook top-edged a slog-sweep off Suresh Raina to depart for 46 and then Eoin Morgan lost his balance pushing forward at Ravichandran Ashwin and was stumped with 117 on the board.
But England’s innings sparked into life when the introduction of the batting powerplay was met with a flurry of boundaries from a charging Root and Buttler.
The latter blasted a quartet of fours and two maximums while Root hit one of each as England racked up 55 in five overs.
Buttler's knock of 49 came to an end in unfortunate circumstances when he was run out after losing sight of the ball following an lbw appeal.
A six over deep midwicket helped Root become the first Yorkshire player to make a Test and ODI ton at Headingley midway through a Jadeja over that also saw him smash another maximum and a four.
However, his heroics ended in the next - the 46th - as he paddle-swept Mohammed Shami straight to short fine-leg before Chris Woakes was bowled by the seamer.
Stokes hit an unbeaten 33 from 22 balls to add late impetus, which was built on by James Anderson with the ball.
Just like England, India were two wickets down inside seven overs as the Lancastrian had Ajinkya Rahane caught at point with the third delivery of the innings before Virat Kohli edged to slip.
Shikhar Dhawan slog-swept Moeen for the first six of the reply but was bowled trying to replicate the shot three balls later.
England then gave both Ambati Rayudu and Raina a life, with Woakes dropping the former rushing in from third man and a diving Cook shelling the latter in the cordon.
Rayudu and Raina threatened to punish England with a stand of 42 in seven overs until the latter edged Moeen behind to leave India 91 for four.
Stokes picked up the key wicket of Rayudu, fresh from moving to another fifty, and then held on to hand Steven Finn the important scalp of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, halting the skipper’s accelerating partnership with Jadeja.
Stokes accounted for Ashwin and Shami, either side of combining with Finn to run-out Bhuvneshwar Kumar, before Jadeja’s late lusty blows only prolonged the inevitable.

Post-Match Reaction
England captain Alastair Cook: “That was a far better performance. That’s what we can play like and it’s been frustrating to not play like that.
“Joe Root played fantastically well. He went on and a couple of other guys supported him. We’ve got a lot of 20s and 30s in this series and the first time we go on, one of the guys takes a bit of responsibility and gets a hundred, we show we’ve got a really good bowling attack to defend it.”
On James Anderson: “He’s an outstanding bowler. Early wickets were key today and to get one in the first over made a massive difference - it puts them behind. They were two or three down by the end of the first 10 and we were always ahead of the game.”
Man-of-the-match Joe Root: "It's great to play at your home ground. The crowd have been exceptional all day and it's nice to get a win.
“I tried to not think too much about it and play on instinct today and it seemed to pay off.
“I enjoy batting with Jos (Buttler). He takes a lot of pressure off me a lot of the time and the way he played today kick-started the end of our innings.”
India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni: “I think we gave away too many wickets. There were quite a few soft dismissals, because of which we were not able to score the amount of runs we wanted to.
“I think 300 was a par score on that wicket. We thought it would do slightly more than what it did but I think that was a par score.”
