Worcestershire have agreed new contracts for spin duo Shaaiq Choudhry and Brett D'Oliveira as well as England Under-19s all-rounder Ed Barnard.

The Pears have been busy tying down their young players in the past month with eight academy products having now committed their futures to New Road in that time.

Choudhry has penned a one-year deal while D’Oliveira will remain for two more seasons. Barnard has extended his deal by an extra year –as Under-19s team-mate Joe Clarke did last week– to keep him at the club until 2016.

Their signatures follow the news that Joe Leach, Chris Russell, Tom Fell, Ben Cox and Tom Kohler-Cadmore agreed to remain as Worcestershire plan for the future.

The signatures of Choudhry and D’Oliveira further bolster Worcestershire’s spin department, which has been led by England all-rounder Moeen Ali and Pakistan international Saeed Ajmal this season.

Choudhry, who is in action for the LV= County Championship Division Two leaders at Derbyshire, has still played in all three formats to earn his deal.

"It is tough for Shaaiq because he has had to compete with Saeed Ajmal and then Moeen Ali,” director of cricket Steve Rhodes said.

"He is an all-rounder, has two strings to his bow, so he can fulfil a batting role as well.

"However he also has to make sure he maintains his spin bowling, which he is well aware of, and we hope he goes well."

Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes sees leg-spinner Brett D'Oliveira as "one for the future" after handing him a two-year deal

Rhodes is also pleased with the progress of leg-spinner D'Oliveira, who helped the Rapids reach the NatWest T20 Blast quarter-finals.

"Brett is very much one for the future. He can bat, he can bowl, he can field. We are very excited by his talents,” Rhodes said.

"Leg-spin bowling is a difficult art and will take time (to develop). A lot of spinners come into their own later in life and he is the type of player we have to be patient with.

"He is now batting higher and higher in the second team and scoring runs. One of Brett's ambitions is to try and put the first-team batters under pressure and he is hoping to do that with weight of runs in the second team.”

Barnard recently helped England Under-19s whitewash South Africa 5-0 in their youth one-day international series and was part of the under-age team that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup earlier this year.

He joins Clarke in extending their one-year deals, and Rhodes added: "I'm really excited by both of them and we want them to have a fair crack of it and have a good apprenticeship at Worcestershire as we believe in them both.

"With Ed, he is an all-rounder. He is seen by England Under-19s at the moment as a batting all-rounder which is probably fair comment.

"However he has got some really good skills and as his body develops, I think you will find a genuine all-rounder there.”
