Rain gives Black Caps series success

England's second NatWest Series Twenty20 international against New Zealand was abandoned with just two deliveries bowled.

The home side needed victory to avoid a series defeat having suffered a five-run loss in Tuesday's encounter, also at the Kia Oval.

Yet their hopes were dashed by rain, which came after Mitchell McClenaghan had Michael Lumb caught at slip for two.

The inclement weather also meant Kevin Pietersen, representing England for the first time following a lengthy injury lay-off, did not get the opportunity to bat.

England Innings

9:07pm - MATCH ABANDONED - That's that then; the poor weather wins I'm afraid. What a disappointment for those in attendance.

9:01pm - THE COVERS COME BACK ON - Yes, it's raining again and, much to the dismay of the crowd, the prospects of a game look bleak.

8:38pm - PLAY TO RESUME AT 9:03pm - Six overs per side; it appears we will, indeed, get a game in!

8:37pm - The outer covers are coming off and there is a noticeable lack of umbrellas around the ground. Could we get a game in?

8:28pm - Play would need to get under way by 9:11pm for a five-over-per-side encounter; it's not looking great at the moment.

7:58pm - And the heavens have opened again...

7:49pm - Some good news at last! It appears the rain has relented and off come the covers.

7:36pm - The groundstaff continue to work hard at the Kia Oval, yet the downpours remain.

7:08pm - There is no sign of the rain abating, I'm afraid.

6:52pm - The full array of covers are on the field; it's pretty grim.

6:32pm - RAIN STOPS PLAY! - Luke Wright arrives in the middle, the drizzle begins and everybody - except the poor groundsmen - heads off the field.

6:31pm - WICKET! Lumb c B McCullum b McClenaghan 2; England 2/1 - What a start for the Kiwis! After clipping the innings' first ball to leg, Michael Lumb edges Mitchell McClenaghan straight to second slip.

Pre-Play News

6:25pm - The players are in the middle and we're just about to get under way.

6:08pm - Pietersen has replaced Morgan, who misses out due to a finger injury, and Danny Briggs comes in for Chris Woakes. Here are the teams:

England: Alex Hales, Michael Lumb, Luke Wright, Kevin Pietersen, Ravi Bopara, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, James Tredwell, Danny Briggs, Jade Dernbach, Boyd Rankin.

New Zealand: Hamish Rutherford, James Franklin, Brendon McCullum (wicketkeeper), Ross Taylor, Tom Latham, Colin Munro, Nathan McCullum, Corey Anderson, Ian Butler, Roneel Hira, Mitchell McClenaghan.

6:04pm - NEW ZEALAND WIN TOSS & BOWL - Brendon McCullum has called correctly at the coin-flip and asked England to make first use of what should be an excellent surface. Kevin Pietersen, as expected, makes his return for England, with Danny Briggs also coming into the XI. The Black Caps, meanwhile, are unchanged.

5:55pm - Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the second NatWest Series Twenty20 international between England and New Zealand. The tourists won the opening encounter, so England - led by James Tredwell in the absence of Eoin Morgan - require victory to draw the rubber.
