India opener Rohit Sharma will miss the remainder of the Royal London one-day international series with England due to a broken finger.

The 27-year-old suffered a fracture to the middle digit in his right hand while fielding during India’s 133-run Duckworth/Lewis Method win in Cardiff on Wednesday.

Murali Vijay has been called up as Rohit’s replacement and will “join the squad in England at the earliest”, according to a Board of Control for Cricket in India statement.

Rohit hit a patient half-century at the SWALEC Stadium but was forced off late in the match when he dropped a Chris Woakes pull at midwicket.

India are expected to ask Ajinkya Rahane to open in place of Rohit alongside Shikhar Dhawan tomorrow, with Ambati Rayudu drafted into the middle order.

India batsman Rohit Sharma sustained the finger injury during the second one-day international against England at Cardiff on Wednesday

Suresh Raina, India's match-winner when they went 1-0 up two days ago, is optimistic they have the right contingency plan.

"Opening in England is always a difficult job, but unfortunately Rohit has got injured," he said.

"Still we have a lot of youngsters. Sanju Samson is here; we have Ambati Rayudu, and we have Vijay coming.

"He is a Test specialist, but he has done well in one-dayers and IPL."
