Ireland all-rounder Kevin O'Brien returns to the squad as captain ahead of the three match one-day international series against Scotland next month.

O'Brien is one of four changes to the Ireland squad that suffered defeat last time out to Sri Lanka A. The other changes see George Dockrell, Max Sorensen and John Mooney all included.

Normally a regular, O'Brien returns to the international scene following successful spells as a T20 specialist, featuring for T&T Red Steel in the Caribbean Premier League and Surrey.

The Ireland skipper said preparations are well under-way for the World Cup in Australia next year: “The focus now for the squad is very much geared towards World Cup preparation, and these three matches against Scotland are an important part of that.

After enjoying life as a T20 specialist around the world, Kevin O'Brien returns to the international fold to captain Ireland

“There are still places up for grabs and everyone’s working really hard to make sure they’re part of what’s sure to be a fantastic event.

“Scotland are ever improving over the last few years, and have a vibrant young squad mixed in with some experienced players, like Majid Haq and Richie Berrington.

"Like ourselves, they will be keen to use these games as preparation for the World Cup, but most importantly we both will be looking to win, so I expect these games to be tough and closely contested."

Preston Mommsen will lead the 13-man Scotland squad, after recovering from a broken finger that forced him to miss the recent series with New Zealand A.

Matt Machan, who was stand-in captain in the absence of Mommsen, is also available, along with Calum MacLeod and Freddie Coleman, who just last week helped the Birmingham Bears to victory in the NatWest T20 Blast.

Durham's Calum MacLeod has enjoyed a good season in domestic cricket, finishing as the leading scorer in T20 cricket for the club

Rob Taylor and Kyle Coetzer are both unavailable due to county commitments, while Gavin Main and Ruaidhri Smith are currently unavailable due to injury.

Ahead of his first clash with Ireland, Scotland coach Grant Bradburn said, “These games pose another big opportunity for these players to enhance their chances of making the plane to the World Cup in 2015.

"I’m looking forward to rubbing shoulders with our celtic cousins, and relishing the chance to experience a rivalry, which I’m told, is quite intense. It’ll be another chance for our players to perform in a high pressure environment.”
