Durham coach Geoff Cook has recovered consciousness and is "making steady progress" following his heart attack on Thursday, the county have confirmed.

The 61-year-old former England batsman has spent the past five days in a coma in Durham City's Dryburn Hospital, but the county this morning announced there have been positive signs.

"Durham is delighted to confirm that Geoff Cook has recovered consciousness and is now making steady progress in hospital," a statement from the club read.

"His family have asked us to thank all of the very many people whose messages of support have given such encouragement."

Cook played in seven Tests and six one-day internationals for England in 1982 and 1983 and became director of cricket at Durham when they became a first-class county in 1991.

He was named as head coach in 2007, immediately winning the Friends Provident Trophy, and brought the club their first county championship titles in 2007 and 2008.
