Recap the first day of Royal London One-Day Cup action when Derbyshire and Glamorgan collected impressive opening wins and Yorkshire sealed victory in a pulsating Roses encounter.
By James O’Brien and Dominic Farrell
9.50pm - That’s all from us but the Royal London One-Day Cup offers little respite to the teams involved today. Derbyshire, Hampshire, Glamorgan, Middlesex and Lancashire are all back in action amid eight games tomorrow.
At least Yorkshire might get to enjoy their celebrations, eh? Join us back here tomorrow for much more of the same.
Here’s a summary of today’s results:
Yorkshire Vikings (324/7) beat Lancashire Lightning (277) by 47 runs at Emirates Old Trafford. Karl Brown struck a career-best 129 before the hosts came up short in the latest chapter of county cricket’s richest rivalry. Alex Lees and Kane Williamson struck classy half-centuries in a fine team display from he White Rose.
Derbyshire Falcons (340/5) beat Hampshire (204) by 136 runs at the 3aaa County Ground. Centurions Wes Durston and Wayne Madsen got the Falcons off to an emphatic start. Michael Carberry and Glenn Maxwell provided early intent before Hampshire subsided.
Glamorgan (175/3) beat Middlesex Panthers (174/8) by seven wickets at the SWALEC Stadium. Three wickets apiece from Michael Hogan and David Lloyd damaged Middlesex badly before Glamorgan openers Jim Allenby and Jacques Rudolph tackled most of the run chase with aplomb.
9.28pm - RESULT! Yorkshire Vikings (324/7) beat Lancashire Lightning (277) by 47 runs at Emirates Old Trafford. Yorkshire secure the Roses bragging rights despite Brown’s heroics, with the flying start granted to them by Lyth and Lees probably proving the difference. Kyle Jarvis was the last man to go, run out by more sharp work behind the stumps from Jonny Bairstow. Last night Yorkshire were desolate following their NatWest T20 Blast exit - what a difference a day makes!
Kabir Ali swings at short Bresnan ball but nicks to Bairstow. Lancs 272-9
— Lancashire CCC (@LancsCCC) July 26, 2014
9.20pm - Lyth takes a stunning low catch to remove Clark, running in from long-off. Rashid’s second wicket follows a lengthy examination of replays from the third umpire. It is the sort of situation that often creates dread among a fielding side the longer it goes on, but the verdict falls in Lyth’s and Yorkshire’s favour. Surely Lancashire’s race is now run on 272 for eight.
9.14pm - An entertaining over from Brooks costs eight as Clark and Kabir Ali send the Yorkshire fielders scampering after some catching chances. Lancashire need 60 from 30 balls.
9.07pm - One ball after a run-out scare, Wayne White ends a seven-ball stay by sending Rashid high into the covers where Kane Williamson holds on.
9.02pm - BROWN GONE! Brooks holds his nerve in a bout of “you miss, I hit” and a swipe across the line ends Brown’s efforts on 129. What a sensational knock. Lancashire need 75 from 46 deliveries with four wickets remaining. Yorkshire must be strong favourites with the century maker back inside.
9pm - Simply wonderful strokeplay from Brown. Adil Rashid deceives him in the flight but the Lancashire man adjusts to swat a six down the ground. A slog-swept four follows in front of square and the over costs 12.
8.56pm - A short ball from Brooks gets the absolute treatment from Brown, landing many rows back. So long as he’s still there, Lancashire will believe. They need 87 from nine overs.
8.45pm - Brown and Croft’s running between the wickets has been relentless and ambitious but they come unstuck chasing a second that isn’t there, with the latter just short on the dive. It’s 213 for five and the big-hitting Jordan Clark comes in to join Brown.
8.40pm - Century for Karl Brown. This really has been a magnificent innings in the circumstances but Brown allows himself little time to take in the deserved standing ovation. He knows there is still much to be done.
8.38pm - Brown is within two runs of his ton but only because Lees has put him down again - once more from a very tough chance. The score is 204 for four with 13 overs to go. Lancashire have done brilliantly after their sluggish start but now need to start finding the boundary rope with greater frequency.
8.27pm - Lancashire are 191 for four after 35 overs and the players take drinks with the batting powerplay upon the resumption. This could be the game right here.
SIX! @karlos173 hits Lyth straight in to Pavilion seats, @LancsCCC 173-4 after 32ov need 152 off 108 balls #LANvYOR
— Lancashire CCC (@LancsCCC) July 26, 2014
8.09pm - Yorkshire find a vital breakthrough with a huge slice of luck. Brown drives hard down the ground off Rich Pyrah and the bowler gets no more than the faintest fingertip on the ball in his follow through. Agonisingly for Horton, the ball clatters into the stumps at the non-striker's end with him well out of his ground.
8.06pm - Horton and Brown bring up the century partnership and Lancashire are 158 for three after 30 overs. The equation is 167 from 120 deliveries. Where’s your money folks?

7.47pm - Brown goes through to a fine half-century that has really altered the complexion of the Lancashire innings. He has one limited-overs ton to his name. The Red Rose probably need the Bolton man to make it two if they are going to pull this off.
7.43pm - That’s the fifty partnership between Lancashire skipper Paul Horton and Brown. The latter has raced to 41 from 33 deliveries.
7.35pm - DROPPED! Brooks returns to the attack and Brown sends a top edge spiralling into the off side. Alex Lees comes tearing in from the fence but can’t hold on.
We're through 20 overs of the home chase of 325. They are 91-3.
— Yorkshire CCC (@Yorkshireccc) July 26, 2014
7.30pm - That’s what the doctor ordered for the Red Rose. Karl Brown advances to Patterson and clouts him for six. Another baseball-style thump yields four more, before a scampered three down to third man. It’s 83 for three after 19 overs.
7.09pm - Another one bites the dust. Davies tries to whip Patterson over mid-on but Bresnan holds on once more and the wicketkeeper batsman goes for a 46-ball 20. Lancashire are 57 for three in the 15th over.
6.59pm - Adam Lyth comes into the attack and his occasional off-spin snares the big wicket of Ashwell Prince, who picks out Bresnan at mid-on. It’s 51 for two and Yorkshire are well on top.
End of the mandatory 10 over Powerplay, @LancsCCC 40-1 Davies 17 Prince 0 need a further 285 off 40 overs #LANvYOR
— Lancashire CCC (@LancsCCC) July 26, 2014
6.45pm - The asking rate is already above seven per-over for Lancashire and the pressure tells as Khawaja departs for 22, top-edging into the on-side where Lyth caught superbly to give Bresnan the breakthrough.
6.36pm - It’s been a good start with the ball from Brooks and Tim Bresnan, who have both used the short ball well. Steven Patterson comes into the attack and will hope to follow their lead. Lancashire are 28 without loss after six overs.
6.23pm - Davies squirts Lancashire’s first four to the point boundary in the third over. They’ll need plenty more where that came from. Brooks then gets one to climb on him and the keeper top edges to the rope.
6.15pm - The teams are back out at Emirates Old Trafford, with Jack Brooks opening the bowling to home pair Usman Khawaja and Alex Davies.
What a great win. Great performances all round. @Wjdurston3 and the skipper outstanding with the bat.
— gareth (@gazcross07) July 26, 2014
5.30pm - Yorkshire close on 324 for seven. It’s an imposing total facing Lancashire, but they will attack it on a true Emirates Old Trafford surface where batting looks a lovely pastime. Brown shelled Rich Pyrah during the final set of six, which was well bowled by Wayne White.
Earlier, half-centurions Lees and Williamson were unable to kick on to three figures as Lancashire put the breaks on mid-innings. Imagine how many Yorkshire might have ended up with!
We’ll catch you after the break.
5.22pm - Kabir gets a third wicket as Karl Brown pouches Jack Leaning on the midwicket fence for a 14-ball 18. Adil Rashid is in at nine in an impressively deep Yorkshire batting line-up.
Yorks 303-6 after 48.
— Yorkshire CCC (@Yorkshireccc) July 26, 2014
5.14pm - Bresnan’s fun comes to an end as he drills a low Kabir full toss to Usman Khawaja at mid-off. An excellent and brisk 32 from the England man but also just reward for Kabir, who is in the midst of an expert spell of death bowling.
5.10pm - Tim Bresnan is lending Yorkshire just the impetus they need. The all-rounder has raced to 28 from 15 deliveries and the White Rose are 285 for five with four overs remaining.
4.57pm - Bairstow gone! Big moment for Lancashire as a top-edged pull off Jordan Clark falls into Croft’s safe hands. Yorkshire are now 256 for five and their rivals have pulled this back well.
4.52pm - Bairstow is in fine nick and most certainly on the charge. Kabir Ali is thumped through wide long-on for four before seeing the next delivery sail back over his head. The seamer then gets a pair of yorkers in, but it could be a high-risk strategy with the Yorkshireman in this mood.
4.48pm - RESULT! Glamorgan (175/3) beat Middlesex Panthers (174/8) by seven wickets at the SWALEC Stadium. Just as they did in the NatWest T20 Blast last night, Glamorgan win at an absolute canter. Openers Rudolph and Allenby struck half-centuries to ensure Middlesex’s below-par total would never be remotely threatening. An excellent team performance from the Welsh county.
4.46pm - It’s two wickets in quick succession for Lancashire as Gale falls in similar fashion to Williamson, lobbing another catch up to Croft at mid-off. That means a second wicket for Parry, who completes his allocation with 2-58 and Yorkshire are 232 for four with nine overs remaining.
4.32pm - RESULT! Derbyshire Falcons (340/5) beat Hampshire (204) by 136 runs at the 3aaa County Ground - Wainwright finishes with 4-34 to complete a miserable day for the visitors.
Glamorgan and Yorkshire are both three down now. The wicket won't prevent the former from getting over the line but the Vikings would dearly have liked Williamson to have seen out the 50 overs. His dismissal for 70 brings Jonny Bairstow to the crease, so we could have some fireworks.
WICKET! Coles is bowled by Durston for a duck and Hampshire are 188-8 (31.3), needing 153 more to win #DERvHAM
— Derbyshire CCC (@DerbyshireCCC) July 26, 2014
4.20pm - Derbyshire have the scent of victory now after Sean Irvine is run out and Wainwright removes Liam Dawson. It is going to be a comprehensive one, too.
Glamorgan lose Allenby but his knock of 70 has ensured they will get their campaign off to a dream start.
4.05pm - Will Smith becomes Wainwright's second victim, departing for 35, and that could be curtains for Hampshire.
Finn removes Rudolph at the SWALEC Stadium but it has come far too late for Middlesex, with Glamorgan needing only 39 to win off 23.4 overs.
Kane Williamson reaches his half-century and looks well set for a big one as Yorkshire reach the end of 34th over on 188 for two.
3.51pm - Does this spell the end of Hampshire's faint hopes? Michael Carberry goes for 55, caught off the bowling of David Wainwright, to leave his side 149 for four.
100 Partnership from Allenby (53*) and Rudolph (46*). Brought up in the 21st over. Glam 100/0, needing 75 more to win in 29 overs #GoGlam
— Glamorgan Cricket (@GlamCricket) July 26, 2014
3.37pm - The Vikings' progress is halted slightly as Lees is caught at long-on off Stephen Parry for 66.
Jim Allenby raises his half-century off 58 balls to continue a brilliant day for Glamorgan.
3.32pm - Glamorgan are coasting to victory against Middlesex on 88 without loss in the 18th over.
Hampshire are rebuilding after losing a couple of quick wickets, while Yorkshire are on course for a big total against Roses rivals Lancashire. They are 147 for one approaching the halfway mark.
WICKET! Adams is caught by Chanderpaul at deep fine-leg for a duck off Palladino. Hampshire 108-3 (12.1), 233 more to win #DERvHAM
— Derbyshire CCC (@DerbyshireCCC) July 26, 2014
3.12pm - Tony Palladino ends Maxwell's innings but you get the sense Hampshire will keep coming at Derbyshire, knowing only something special will see them reach the 341 required for an unlikely win.
Lees has brought up his fifty to take the Vikings to 105 for one.
3.00pm - Glamorgan are well on their way to chasing down their target of 175, with Jacques Rudolph and Jim Allenby taking them to 46 without loss at the end of the ninth.
Glenn Maxwell has picked up where James Vince left off. He is 26 off 14 balls and Hampshire are flying on 87 for one.
Yorkshire continue to make good progress, 96 for the loss of Lyth in the 16th.
WICKET! Much-needed breakthrough as Vince drives Taylor straight to cover for 30. Hampshire 52-1 (5.4); 289 more to win #DERvHAM
— Derbyshire CCC (@DerbyshireCCC) July 26, 2014
2.38pm - Lancashire desperately needed and they have one as Lyth is caught in the deep by Karl Brown off the bowling of Kyle Jarvis to depart for 46 with Yorkshire 69 for one after 9.5.
2.34pm - We could be in for a thiller at the 3aaa County Ground, where Hampshire have moved to 29 without loss only three overs in.
Successive boundaries for Lyth off Jarvis. 53-0 in the eighth.
— Yorkshire CCC (@Yorkshireccc) July 26, 2014
2.23pm- Hampshire and Glamorgan have begun their contrasting run chases, with the former having it all to do to get their campaign off to the perfect start.
2.18pm - The Vikings are not dwelling on their T20 exit. They are 29 without loss after five overs.
2.04pm - Yorkshire are up and running thanks to a four from Adam Lyth, who has opened up with talented youngster Alex Lees.
INNINGS BREAK! Chanderpaul (29*) and Hughes (5*) walk off after Derbyshire hit 340-5 #DERvHAMhttps://t.co/B65WrG94e5
— Derbyshire CCC (@DerbyshireCCC) July 26, 2014
1.39pm - Middlesex would definitely have taken a total of 174 after they were reduced to 90 for eight. Their bowlers will have something to bowl at when Glamorgan come out to bat thanks to 40s from Dexter and Finn.
Hampshire must chase 341 after centuries from Durston and Madsen inspired Derbyshire to a mammoth score.
Meanwhile at Emirates Old Trafford, Yorkshire Vikings, looking to bounce back from the disappointment of missing out on the NatWest T20 Blast quarter-finals, have won the toss and will bat in their Roses clash with Lancashire Lightning.
Wicket. Madsen is caught at short cover for a career-best score of 138. Derbyshire 321-4 (48); Chanderpaul 27* #DERvHAM
— Derbyshire CCC (@DerbyshireCCC) July 26, 2014
1.19pm - Dexter and Finn are doing a good job for their side, with their unbeaten partnership of 58 taking Middlesex up towards 150 with four overs remaining.
Derbyshire are on course for 330/340, with Madsen on 135 in a score of 307 for three in the 47th over.
1.06pm - A captain's knock from Madsen as he becomes the second Derbyshire batsman to reach three figures on the opening day of the new cup competion. He quickly hit Sean Ervine for six to show he is not done yet.
12.56pm - Joy at last for Hampshire as Will Smith traps Durston lbw to end a brilliant innings of 134 from 129 balls.
12.51pm - It is not getting any better for Hampshire, who will soon be faced with a daunting target. Durston and Madsen have now put on 220 for the third wicket and have just over 10 overs to take Derbyshire's total to 300 and beyond.
Middlesex are heading towards a semi-competitive score thanks to a 30-run stand between Neil Dexter and Steven Finn.
CAREER-BEST! Madsen's 79* is his highest score in List A cricket! Well done Wayne! Derbyshire 207-2 (35); Durston 110* #DERvHAM
— Derbyshire CCC (@DerbyshireCCC) July 26, 2014
12.29pm - Durston has made history by becoming the first player to reach a Royal London One-Day Cup ton. It took him 106 balls and contained eight fours and one six. Madsen is not too far behind as Derbyshire close in on 200, having been 20 for two early in their innings.
Middlesex have hit a milestone of their own, albeit one which will not raise too many smiles. They are 101 for eight and still in big trouble.
12.18pm - And another one gone, Tim Murtagh giving Lloyd his third wicket. We could be in for an early finish at the SWALEC Stadium.
12.09pm - Middlesex are not coping at all well with the transition from T20 cricket to the new 50-over format. Toby Roland-Jones is the seventh Panthers man to fall and they are in danger of being bowled out for under 100.
At Derby, Madsen has gone to his fifty as the hosts show Middlesex how it is done on 162 for two in the 28th.
WICKET - Middx 86-6 in 24th. Simpson c Wallace b Lloyd 14.
— Middlesex Cricket (@Middlesex_CCC) July 26, 2014
11.51am - Sorry Panthers fans, Gubbins is the latest victim of the commentator's curse. He is caught behind off spinner Dean Cosker to leave Middlesex on the ropes on 76 for five.
In contrast, Durston and Madsen continue to pile on the runs against Hampshire, with their stand now into three figures.
11.43am - Durston brings up his half-century from 55 balls as Derbyshire pass 100 in the 19th over. They look on course for a big total against Hampshire.
Middlesex are mounting a recovery at the SWALEC Stadium, Nick Gubbins leading the way on 38 not out.
11.28am - Wes Durston and Wayne Madsen are going great guns for the Falcons. Their partnership of 58 has taken the home side to 78 for two at the 15-over mark.
Things go from bad to worse for Middlesex as they lose their fourth wicket, Ryan Higgins edging behind to give Dewi Penrhyn-Jones his first senior scalp.
WICKET: Hogan gets his third of the morning. This time it's Morgan - caught behind for 4. Middx 33/3 after 10.3 overs
— Glamorgan Cricket (@GlamCricket) July 26, 2014
11.06am - Middlesex are in a spot of bother now and Hogan is the man to do the damage again. Chris Rogers lobs a catch to David Lloyd at mid-on to leave Glamorgan in a strong position in the ninth over.
Derbyshire have recovered to reach 47 for two after 10 overs.
10.45am - Derbyshire hit 16 from the first two overs but have been pegged back by two Hampshire wickets, the latest coming as Scott Elstone is bowled by Matt Coles without scoring.
Wicket. Godleman is caught at point off Wood for 5. Derbyshire 17-1(3); Durston 11* #DERvHAM
— Derbyshire CCC (@DerbyshireCCC) July 26, 2014
10.35am - Middlesex lose a wicket in the first over as Dawid Malan leaves a straight one and is bowled by Michael Hogan for a golden duck. Great start by Glamorgan.
10.31am - We are up and running in both of our early starts. Will there be fireworks from batsmen still in T20 mode or a more considered approach with plenty of overs in front of them?
10.14am - It will be interesting to see how the teams go about their business in the middle overs. They may have to bide their time and set a platform for the last 10 overs, which may take some adjustment after a 14-match NatWest T20 Blast campaign. The group stage of that compeitition came to an end in style last night.
10.03am - We have news from the middle at Derby, where Hampshire have won the toss and stuck the home side in.
Glamorgan have done likewise so Middlesex will join Derbyshire in getting an early crack at the new 50-over format with bat in hand.
10am – Hello and welcome to the first day of the Royal London One-Day Cup, the new domestic List A competition. The 18 counties have been split into two pools, Group A and Group B, with the top four in each progressing to the quarter-finals.
Today’s fixtures are as follows:
Group A
Derbyshire Falcons v Hampshire, the 3aaa County Ground, 10.30am start
Lancashire Lightning v Yorkshire Vikings, Emirates Old Trafford, 2pm start
