Jerome Taylor took four wickets as West Indies bowled New Zealand out for 221 on the opening day of the second Test in Port of Spain.
Tom Latham hit 82 for the tourists, who were looking to put themselves in a position to win the three-match series following their victory at Sabina Park last week.
Kane Williamson made a century in that match and added 42 here but, other than an unbeaten 45 from Ross Taylor, no one else could score well enough for the Black Caps, who were limited to 221 all out after choosing to make first use of the wicket. That was largely down to Taylor's impressive figures of 4-34 off 17 overs.
The hosts lost Chris Gayle before the close to finish the day on six for one.
Hamish Rutherford only managed three runs before edging a delivery from Taylor to Chris Gayle at first slip, with Williamson and Latham then building a strong second-wicket partnership.

The duo enjoyed a 104-run stand until Williamson was caught, trying to hook a Shannon Gabriel bouncer after lunch.
Latham pushed the score on a little further but could not manage a first Test century as he was caught superbly by Sulieman Benn at gully off Kemar Roach.
When skipper Brendon McCullum saw an lbw decision off Benn overturned on review and departed for four, New Zealand's innings completely unravelled.
Jerome Taylor took centre stage during a fantastic spell with the ball, with the wickets of Jimmy Neesham and BJ Watling and Ish Sodhi, the latter two making ducks.
Ross Taylor offered some resistance but was running out of partners at the other end as Benn and Gabriel grabbed another wicket apiece, claiming the scalps of Tim Southee and Mark Craig respectively.
Benn ended the innings with a three-for as he trapped Trent Boult lbw, giving West Indies the chance to start their response in the closing overs of day one.
Boult fared better with the ball and removed Gayle with a perfect yorker to leave hosts six for one at stumps.
