4.22pm - Somerset's chase has begun at Taunton, with Sussex praying that bowler Steven Magoffin can repeat his first-innings heroics, where he took 6/60. Johann Myburgh and Marcus Trescothick are the men at the crease for the hosts.

Meanwhile at Canterbury, Panesar has taken the new ball!

4.12pm - The players will be able to enjoy an extra cucumber sandwich at New Road as rain has delayed the start of the evening session in Worcestershire's clash with Hampshire. They're also staying off at Edgbaston as rain looks imminent in Warwickshire's game with Lancashire.

They might be going through the motions at Canterbury as Kent and Essex play out the final session of their match, with no prospect of it ending in anything other than a draw, but Monty Panesar has struck early after the resumption to remove Sam Billings for 11. Kent are 225 for six - a lead of 172.

4.01pm - Yorkshire make their second breakthrough at Headingley as Phil Jaques is dismissed by Steven Patterson who induces a nick after getting some extra bounce. The visitors are still 12 runs behind on 30 for two at tea.

Will Beer is the last man out for Sussex as they are dismissed for 178 at Taunton, meaning Somerset require 104 to win. They will fancy knocking those off in the evening session!

3.45pm - Agony! Burns falls one run short of a maiden double-century! Liam Norwell finds the edge and Alex Gidman takes the catch at slip. It ends a superb knock that lasted 375 balls. His partnership of 212 with Solanki has set records, and leaves Surrey 327 runs ahead at tea.

Somerset finally take their ninth wicket. Steffan Piolet had combined with Will Beer to record a fifty-partnership, stretching Sussex's lead to 91, but his fun is over as he is pouched at slip by Trescothink off George Dockrell.

Tea is taken at New Road, Canterbury and Grace Road.

3.35pm - Fittingly, it's Ajmal who rounds things off. Danny Briggs is bowled for one, giving the spinner a seventh wicket as Hampshire are out for 219 and trail by 183. Surely they'll be asked to go again?

Lancashire have wiped their first-innings deficit out at Edgbaston, with all 10 wickets still intact.

3.31pm - It looks like Hampshire's openers will very shortly be batting again at New Road. Charles Morris bowls David Balcombe for nought, leaving the visitors 187 runs behind on first innings with one wicket left.

3.24pm - Make that six for Ajmal as Matt Coles is trapped in front for 19.

At Canterbury, Tymal Mills makes an important breakthrough for Essex. He ends the Darren Stevens/Daniel Bell-Drummond partnership on 87 by removing the former for 47.

3.17pm - Ajmal completes a five-wicket haul, leaving Hampshire very much in trouble. Michael Bates is the latest man out as the visitors to New Road slip to 205 for seven, still 197 runs behind. Can they avoid the follow-on?

Wainwright is another with a five-for. Rob Taylor becomes the spinner's next victim as he perishes for 19.

3.08pm - Tom Smith cleans up Boyd Rankin and that's Warwickshire all out for 322. They lead by 36 against Lancashire in a finely-poised contest.

Solanki brings up his 34th first-class hundred. Surrey's lead is 300, with eight wickets still in hand. Gloucestershire have a mammoth task to break this partnership - currently worth 185 runs - never mind save the game.

2.54pm - James Vince falls two runs short of a half-century, with Joe Leach doing the damage. Hampshire are 190 for six, still trailing by 212.

2.49pm - Yorkshire are all out for 247, a lead of 42. Patel removes Steven Patterson for nought to take his third wicket.

2.43pm - Rich Pyrah is the ninth wicket down for Yorkshire, but not until after a blistering run-a-ball 45. He's taken the hosts to a 42-run lead on first innings at Headingley.

Warwickshire are also nine down, with Kerrigan removing Chris Wright. The Bears' lead currently stands at seven.

2.35pm - A wicket for Derbyshire - and Wainwright hasn't taken it! Mark Footitt gets in on the act, having Ramnaresh Sarwan caught at slip, to leave Leicestershire 74 for five.

Somerset take another step towards victory as Trego picks up a second victim, finding Wells' edge and Craig Kieswetter does the rest.

2.25pm -  This morning's hero Alfonso Thomas is back! Luke Wright is caught at the second attempt by Marcus Trescothick at slip, giving Thomas his fifth wicket. Somerset are in a very dominant position at Taunton.

Warwickshire are eight down, still trailing on first innings by 14, as Kyle Hogg takes his third scalp to remove Jeetan Patel.

Vikram Solanki records his fifty as Surrey continue to punish Gloucestershire, while Daniel Bell-Drummond has also reached the landmark. His Kent side have a lead of 83 with six wickets left.

2.16pm - A flurry of wickets! Yorkshire lose Aaron Finch, who is bowled by Samit Patel. The White Rose's lead is 15 with two wickets left. At New Road, Saeed Ajmal takes two in one over, accounting for Glenn Maxwell and then Sean Ervine.

Elsewhere, Leicestershire lose a fourth with Wainwright, again, striking. He has 4-9 in eight overs. Six of those runs were scored by Josh Cobb from one delivery. The next he holed out to short extra-cover.

2.08pm - Rikki Clarke can't convert his fifty into something bigger as he's bowled around his legs by Simon Kerrigan for 56.

Sussex are now effectively 30 for six in their second innings with Peter Trego accounting for Ben Brown. Brown's partnership with Luke Wright is ended on 71. Luke Joyce is the new man in, and he's accompanied by a runner.

1.50pm - Rory Burns continues to motor in Bristol, he's just reached 150 for the first time in his career.

Kent are now four down at Canterbury, with Ben Harmison falling to David Masters. The hosts are 120 for four - a lead of 67 in their second innings.

1.44pm - Peter Siddle wastes little time getting down to business in the afternoon. The session is just two balls old and Tim Bresnan is walking back to the pavilion, having edged the Australian to Riki Wessels at slip.

There are early wickets at Edgbaston and Grace Road, with Tim Ambrose trapped lbw for 62 at the former, while Angus Robson has been stumped off David Wainwright, who has taken all three of Leicestershire's wickets, at the latter.

1.40pm - We're back under way around the country.

1.15pm - Here is a wrap of the matches at lunch:

Division One

It has all been about Somerset’s Alfonso Thomas this morning at Taunton. The veteran seamer grabbed four wickets in as many balls as Sussex lost their entire top-order with the score on 33. Ben Brown and Luke Wright have since provided some calm to steer the visitors into a four-run lead at 79 for five.

A 92-run sixth-wicket stand between Tim Ambrose and Rikki Clarke has revived Warwickshire after they batted through the morning session. The Bears are 234 for five and in sight of Lancashire’s first-innings 286.

Yorkshire lost four wickets rapidly this morning before Aaron Finch and Tim Bresnan have bedded down to helped them to 183 for six against Nottinghamshire. The White Rose trail by 22 runs.

Division Two

A draw looks likely on the final day at the Spitfire Ground where Kent are 110 for three and holding a 57-run lead over Essex.

Surrey are continuing on their merry way with Rory Burns registering his highest first-class score. The opener is unbeaten on 145 and his side are 284 for two – a lead of 172 against Gloucestershire.

Hampshire lost Will Smith for 67 just before lunch – one of two Saeed Ajmal wickets for the session – as they reached the break at 114 for three against Worcestershire.

David Wainwright hit a career-best 109, to help Derbyshire to a 25-run first-innings lead. The slow left-armer then grabbed two wickets to leave Leicestershire 34 for two.

12.59pm - We're closing on lunch in all seven games, so we'll update the state of play in just a few moments.

12.53pm - Wainwright's day gets better as he strikes twice in his first two overs. The slow left-armer took just two balls to make his first impact - bowling Greg Smith - before Ned Eckersely was sent on his way lbw for a duck. Leicestershire are 33 for two - a lead of eight runs. The Foxes have lost two wickets with the score on 33 - there is something about that number today.

Saeed Ajmal traps Hampshire skipper Jimmy Adams lbw at New Road in the top-of-the-table clash at New Road. Adams and Smith had moved serenely through the morning session, but now James Vince must see out the last 15 minutes or so with his side 107 for two.

12.43pm - After the carnage this morning, Sussex are edging towards a lead at Taunton. Brown and Luke Wright have brought some calm, in a 35-run stand, after Thomas obliterated the top order. The visitors are 68 for five and seven runs in deficit.

12.39pm - Tim Ambrose moves to his fifty, from 84 balls, as he and Rikki Clarke continue to dig in for Warwickshire. Their stand for the sixth wicket is worth 77 and the hosts have recovered to 219 for five. Lancashire's first-innings 286 is drawing into sight.

12.21pm - Burns has gone past his previous first-class best score of 121. Surrey are 252 for two and ahead by 140 runs on the first innings. ie) They are in total control.

12.05pm - Yorkshire's problems are compounded as Adil Rashid departs to leave them 128 for six against Notts. Rashid edges a lifting ball from Andre Adams that a safe Notts slips cordon gobbles up. Riki Wessels is the man who holds the catch at first slip.

12.01pm - Ryder has his seventh wicket of the match as Sam Northeast is snapped up by Tom Westley. Kent lead by 20 runs with eight wickets in hand on the final day in Canterbury.

Gloucestershire are finally making some headway against Surrey. Amla manages just nine before Will Gidman removes him lbw.

11.52am - Wainwright's career-best innings ends on 109. A superb one-handed catch by Angus Robson at gully does the trick, with Rob Taylor the bowler. Derbyshire have snuck ahead though at 327 for nine - which represents a lead of 16 runs.

11.42am - During all the commotion at Taunton, Surrey and Kent lost their first wickets.

Zafar Ansari failed to follow his Surrey opening partner Burns to a maiden first-class century by just two runs - caught by Alex Gidman off Benny Howell. Their opening stand was worth 215 runs.

At the Spitfire Ground, Rob Key is bowled by Essex's new 'golden arm' in Jesse Ryder. Kent are 71 for one.

11.40am - Ben Brown has scored a single off Thomas. Sussex have got off 33 - a number that is sure to haunt them now.

11.35am - Sussex now lose a fourth and a fifth wicket with the score on 33. They have lost their entire top-order on the same score. Peter Trego removes Chris Nash and then when Thomas returns for his next over he sends Matt Machan's stumps flying immediately via an inside edge. That's four in four balls for the South African. Wow.

11.31am - Notts haver another wicket at Headingley with home skipper Andrew Gale well snapped up by Samit Patel at second slip. Siddle does the damage - that's his third wicket of the innings - and Yorkshire are 95 for four.

11.28am - ALFONSO THOMAS HAT-TRICK! The veteran Somerset seamer has ripped open the Sussex top order and the game at Taunton.  The in-form Ed Joyce is the third man out, edging behind to Craig Kieswetter.

Joe Anyon was first man out, bowled, before Thomas trapped Rory Hamilton-Brown lbw with a well-aimed yorker. Sussex are 33 for three and still 42 runs in arrears.

11.18am -  Rory Burns has ticked off the two runs he needed at the start of play to bring up his first century of the summer - from 206 balls and including 13 boundaries. Surrey's openers continue on their merry way - the 200 stand is now up - and they have the luxury of one Hashim Amla in the sheds next.

11.13am - The first wicket of the day falls at Headingley. Yorkshire's 20-year-old right-hander Jack Leaning batted well for his 41 - seeing off Peter Siddle's impressive spell late on the opening day - but he has been bowled by Luke Fletcher.

11.05am -  We have started around the country. David Wainwright picks up where he left off last night as he drives through the covers for four. He is now up to 87 - an unlucky number for Australians, but hopefully not Yorkshire-born slow left-armers now plying their trade at Derbyshire.

10.33am - Welcome to today's live action from the LV= County Championship. Most of the games are evenly poised at the start of play, while Surrey will look to further strengthen their position after a stunning opening day at Gloucestershire.
