Derbyshire elite performance director Graeme Welch has been promised significant investment in his playing squad at the end of the current season.

Welch, whose side are currently bottom of the LV= County Championship Division Two, will be given funds to attract experienced players in a bid to achieve a target of becoming an established Division One side.

The 42-year-old, who was appointed in January, has been told to indentify players who will be "matchwinners" as well as have an ability to develop young talent.

Derbyshire chairman Chris Grant said: “When Graeme was appointed and his coaching team assembled back in January, he was given a very clear objective.

Graeme Welch will have cash to spend in the winter

“Clearly, the board was aware that for Graeme to achieve this ambitious objective he would require two things; time and additional financial resources.

“Firstly, time to put in place his own coaching methods. Secondly, time to evaluate his players - their individual strengths and weaknesses as cricketers and as characters - and thirdly, time to re-shape the squad with players he feels are capable of delivering the objectives.

“He sees huge potential in some of our home produced youngsters and is confident that he has a core of senior players that can take the club forward.

“However, he will also have an opportunity to make changes to his playing squad, either at the end of this season or next.

“The club will ensure that Graeme is given every possible support on the financial side to allow him to recruit the kind of high-calibre player necessary to deliver our stated cricketing goals.

“In addition, as Graeme appraises his playing squad at the end of the current season, he will have more than sufficient financial resources at his disposal to secure the services of a number of consistent new players who can be match winners for the club.

“This in itself requires careful management and will take time as the right players need to become available, buy into our vision and have the ability and willingness to help develop our homegrown players."
