Alex Hales set up Nottinghamshire Outlaws for victory over Derbyshire Falcons with 63 from 32 balls in their NatWest T20 Blast match at the 3aaa County Ground.

Hales' quick-fire innings helped his side reach 165 for five and claim a comfortable win by five wickets and with 19 balls remaining.

Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen chose to bat, and it looked to have been a wise decision as his side amassed a total of 164 for seven from their 20 overs.

However, Notts were able to rely on Hales, the former world number one Twenty20 batsman, to secure their first win since the opening night of the Blast.

Michael Lumb and Riki Wessels made valuable contributions before Steven Mullaney hit the winning runs with a boundary off Tony Palladino.

Earlier, Marcus North had posted the highest score of Derbyshire's innings with 57 from 47 balls, which included six fours, while Madsen scored 36 and Tim Groenewald chipped in with 19 from seven balls at the death.

Returning England left-armer Harry Gurney, who took 2-24, was the pick of the Nottinghamshire bowlers, accounting for opener Stephen Moore caught and bowled from the first delivery of the match. Wicketkeeper Gareth Cross was his other victim.

Samit Patel and Andy Carter claimed two wickets apiece, with Ajmal Shahzad dismissing number three Tom Knight for six.

But the best performance of the night with the bat came from Hales, who hit 11 boundaries and one maximum in a rapid opening burst before he was bowled by Alex Hughes.

His dismissal had left the Outlaws four down for 112, following the dismissals of Lumb, James Taylor and Patel. But Wessels, Mullaney and Chris Read helped the visitors over the line.

It was a difficult night for Derbyshire's bowlers, with 25 extras added to Notts' total and the best figures of the night coming from Mark Footitt's four overs, as he took 2-33.

Defeat for the Falcons left them tied to the foot of the North Group table without a win in their opening five games.
