Watch highlights of Sri Lanka's

By Matt Somerford

Half-centuries from Mahela Jayawardene and Lahiru Thirimanne helped Sri Lanka to a series-clinching six-wicket win over England in the fifth Royal London one-day international against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston.

The duo combined in a decisive 98-run fourth-wicket stand to form the basis of the tourists' chase of England's 219 all out.

Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews had the final say with back-to-back boundaries, as he supplied the late hitting required to finish a tetchy encounter with 10 balls to spare.

England were bowled out in 48.1 overs despite skipper Alastair Cook's 56 at the top of the order, where he combined in a 76-run stand with Ian Bell.

The home innings ended in some acrimony, however, after Jos Buttler was 'mankaded' by spinner Sachithra Senanayake after backing up too far.

Senanayake had previously warned Buttler not to leave his ground early and when the England wicketkeeper-batsman did so again in the 44th over the spinner opted to remove the bails, as he is entitled to under the laws of the game.

The umpires then consulted with Mathews before confirming Buttler had to be on his way, much to the derision of the home fans who booed the dismissal.

Mathews had nonetheless intelligently used his bowlers during England's innings as they lost their way on a teasingly slow wicket after Cook and Bell had given them a solid footing.

Soft dismissals peppered the innings with Bell and Gary Ballance typifying what was to come as they offered lobbed return catches to begin England's troubles.

Cook was caught behind, after defiantly trying to anchor matters, when a paddle sweep hit his shoulder and allowed Kumar Sangakkara to take the catch behind the stumps.

England retained hope of a testing total while Buttler remained - following his blistering century at Lord's on Saturday - until Senanayake opted for his unconventional mode of dismissal.

England attempted to hit back with the ball after a fast Sri Lanka start saw them take 50 from the first 42 balls.

James Tredwell claimed two wickets in his first two overs - including Tillakarantne Dilshan and Lord's centurion Sangakkara - before a fired up James Anderson pinned Kusal Perera lbw.

But Jayawardene and Thirimanne then set about a measured chase that squeezed England's hopes.

England's bid was briefly revived by Jayawardene's dismissal, skying a catch off Chris Jordan, but a focused Mathews kept his nerve to hit an unbeaten 42 from 34 balls to complete the series win.

Post-Match Quotes

England captain Alastair Cook on his side's total:"We were probably about 20 or 30 short. They bowled pretty well on that wicket, it turned a bit, it was quite slow - it suited them and full credit to them.

"If we had got 250 on that wicket then they'd have found it quite tough to chase it down. We bowled pretty well."

Head Coach Peter Moores told Sky Sports that batting hurt England most during the series:"We didn't bat well enough over the series. As a unit we've been disappointed we didn't really post the score. I think today is we'd got 250 we'd have been able to defend it."

Moores had reason to be optimistic though, adding: "Our fielding has improved massively through the series and individuals have had their time.

"Harry Gurney has come through, we’ve found out quite a lot about him. On a pitch here that was slow he bowled cutters, bowled around the wicket and bowled very well. Jimmy Anderson’s had a good series, (so has) Chris Jordan (and) we saw the Buttler knock.

“Individuals have done well. We probably haven’t put it all together on the same day. The closest was the Kia Oval at the start.”

Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews was delighted to end a eight-year wait to win a 50-over series in England:"It’s our first series win here since 2006, it’s a great moment for us - beating England in England. I thought the bowlers, after the start they got of 70 for one in 12-odd overs, it was a brilliant effort to pull them back to 220."

Sri Lanka Innings

10.02pm - SRI LANKA WIN BY SIX WICKETS TO TAKE THE SERIES 3-2! SL 222/4; Thirimanne 60, Mathews 42 - Mathews hits back-to-back boundaries off Bopara to seal the series with 10 balls to spare.

9.59pm - Mathews finds the rope. It was not controlled as he swiped a short ball just wide of third man. That brings up the 50 partnership with Thirimanne. Sri Lanka need six from the final two overs.

9.57pm - Good over so far from Jordan. Just four from the first four balls. Eleven needed from 14 balls.

9.53pm - CHANCE! - Anderson drops a difficult one-handed return chance from Mathews. The Sri Lanka skipper swiped away the first ball of the over for a boundary, but could not take another run and Anderson almost got his man. It was just hit too firmly to cling on.

9.50pm - Anderson is back for his last over. Sri Lanka need 19 from 24 balls.

9.45pm - Mathews jumps down the wicket and slaps Gurney for a one-bounce four through mid-off. He then steps back and hits the ball even harder through cover. He is relieving the pressure with the odd big shot. England must get him to retain any lingering hope.

9.41pm - Mathews swipes at Jordan and the ball flies away to Gurney at third man. The ball falls just short of him for the second time in the game, despite a desperate dive, which is hardly rewarded as the ball then goes to the rope. Sri Lanka take 10 from the over to ease a required rate that was drifting above a run-a-ball.

9.35pm - FIFTY! Thirimanne (89b 1x4 1x6) - Thirimanne completes a measured half-century. It was just what Sri Lanka required after he came in following three quick wickets.

9.27pm - Tredwell bowls his final over. He turns one past a Thirimanne drive, but can't sign off with a third wicket. He finishes with excellent figures of 2-30 from 10 overs. Sri Lanka need 46 from 48 balls.

9.21pm - Buttler has been spoken to by the umpires after he has a quick word with Angelo Mathews, perhaps bringing up his dismissal earlier with the Sri Lanka skipper. The tourists nonetheless, aside from Jayawardene's brief loss of concentration for his wicket, appear fully focused on the job at hand.

9.10pm - WICKET! Jayawardene c Anderson b Jordan 53; SL 160/4 - Jordan grabs the key wicket of Jayawardene after he reaches 50. The Sri Lankan tried to slap him down the ground, but only skied a catch for Anderson to hold on to at mid-off. England breathe again.

9.06pm - FIFTY! Jayawardene (87b 4x4 0x6) - The veteran right-hander turns Gurney away for a single and has reached his half-century. It is his first of an otherwise barren series. England might have had him on eight when he edged Gurney between wicketkeeper Buttler and first slip Jordan.

9.04pm - The good news for England is that the rain appears to be easing. The bad news, Thirimanne drives nicely to the cover rope off Anderson, who has just one over left now.

8.57pm - We are taking the second drinks break now. Sri Lanka require 73 from 84 balls to win the series. If the rain does sweep in, they have a good margin over the Duckworth-Lewis calculations. Put simply, England need wickets.

8.51pm - Sri Lanka take no risks in that Anderson over, which costs just a single. With a handy buffer on Duckworth-Lewis, and the rain coming down harder, the tourists need only to avoid losing wickets. Jayawardene is now complaining about the weather. The umpires tell him to get on with it.

8.49pm - With Sri Lanka coasting and the rain threatening to blow in, Cook has to turn to Anderson. He's on now. The game could centre on these next 15 minutes.

8.44pm - A Thirimanne pull falls agonisingly short of Gurney at fine leg before Jayawardene shows his supreme touch as he guides Bopara fine past Buttler, who is standing up, for four. Eleven taken from that over.

8.43pm - Jayawardene pulls Bopara away for a boundary and he now has his highest score of the series. It has not been the best start to his tour of England so far but he may be guiding his side to a series win.

8.38pm - The Sri Lanka batsmen continue to milk the runs without any real risk. The required runs are now less than 100 and England's need for wickets prompts Tredwell to come back into the attack. He has found some grip on this wicket.

8.33pm - Jayawardene smashes Root through cover for Sri Lanka's first boundary in seven overs.

8.21pm - Sri Lanka take seven from that Root over without much fuss. They tick past the hundred in that over. Their first 50 came off 42 balls, the second 50 took 116 balls.

8.17pm - Sri Lanka continue to stay just ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis calculations. The rain is not falling but the dark clouds lurk overhead, so it is sensible that they are trying to keep their head above water - so to speak. The tourists are 99 for three at the halfway stage. The D/L par score is 98.

8.06pm - Thirmanne launches Tredwell into the stands and Sri Lanka are just starting to steady now.

7.56pm - CHANCE! Jayawardene edges Gurney but neither Jos Buttler or Jordan go for it as the ball sails between them. It was probably Jordan's catch. Will that be costly? Jayawardene was on eight.

7.47pm - Lahiru Thirimanne gets lucky as he is early on a drive that chips up over Gurney but short of mid-off. We're going to take drinks with Sri Lanka 72 for three after 17 overs.

7.42pm - Gurney returns with a maiden. Just what the doctor ordered and with Root's next six balls costing only two the runs continue to dry up.

7.37pm - Cook throws the ball to Root to see if he can sneak a wicket. He was unable to, but only three runs came from the over. Anderson is now given a rest with Gurney returning after his expensive start.

7.34pm - Anderson concedes two from his seventh over and Sri Lanka are 65 for three from 13 overs. At the same stage England were 65 without loss.

7.29pm - No wicket for Tredwell in his third over, but it is a maiden and the pressure begins to ramp up further. Anderson is being kept on by Cook to have a go at Mahela Jayawardene.

7.24pm - WICKET! Perera lbw Anderson 19; SL 62/3 - Perera called for a review after being given out lbw by umpire Michael Gough. The initial thought was he must have hit the ball, he didn't, and height was not a problem to give Anderson his first wicket of the night.

7.18pm - WICKET! Sangakkara c Jordan b Tredwell 2; SL 59/2 - Tredwell strikes again and it is the big wicket of Sangakkara. The left-hander follows a ball that grips and turns and Jordan holds a good catch a slip. That ends the 10-over powerplay, after which England found the going tough.

7.16pm - Anderson bowls a maiden as England look to try and put the clamps on after the fast start.

7.08pm - WICKET! Dilshan c Root b Tredwell 28; SL 55/1 - Alastair Cook is rewarded for turning to spin as Tredwell strikes with his second ball. Root holds a good catch diving to his right at cover. Lord's centurion Kumar Sangakkara strides to the crease.

6.59pm - CHANCE! - Chris Jordan spills a low return catch from Perera. After bowling a wide first ball the Sussex man almost makes an immediate impression as he replaces Gurney after two overs. Width later in the over is twice leapt upon by Dilshan with back-to-back fours.

6.58pm - Anderson gives away three wides before four leg byes, it is not the start England wanted even though he follows it up by beating Dilsan's bat twice. Sri Lanka are 35 for none after five overs.

6.52pm - Gurney drops short three times and is made to pay three times. Perera cuts away a boundary before Dilshan twice finds the square-leg rope. Fourteen from the over, although they almost had Perera with a run-out chance at the non-striker's end.

6.47pm - Anderson strays onto Perera's pads and, with fine leg in the ring, he is punished with a boundary. Bell has returned to the field with Sri Lanka 13 for none after three overs.

6.44pm - After Anderson's first over cost just that single, Harry Gurney begins with a couple of wides outside off stump. Ian Bell is off the field at present - after stopping a stinging Kusal Perera drive in the first over - with Chris Woakes his replacement.

6.35pm - We have started. James Anderson's first ball to Tillakaratne Dilshan is guided away to third man for a single.

5.19pm - Play is set to begin again at 6.30pm, although the rain has returned since that decision was made and the covers are back on.

5.15pm - The Sri Lanka innings was supposed to start now but the rain is set to delay matters. The covers are being removed right now, thankfully, and the rain appears to have stopped. Hopefully a re-start is not too far away. I'll provide more details as they are supplied.

England Innings

Watch highlights of England's innings

5.28pm - WICKET! Anderson b Malinga 5; Eng 219 all out - A slower ball does for Anderson and England are all out, just as the rain starts to fall, for 219 from 48.1 overs.

5.24pm - WICKET! Jordan run out (Kusal) 30; Eng 218/9 - Jordan calls for the single and changes his mind. It is too late as James Anderson had already committed so the all-rounder is left stranded as Kusal Perera lobs the ball for Senanayake to take the bails, again.

5.23pm - Three overs left and England are 218 for eight. Mendis is the bowler.

5.17pm - The crowd boo Senanayake again as he bowls another over. The Sri Lanka spinner is struck for four by Jordan from his first ball, which the fans enjoy.

5.13pm - WICKET! Tredwell b Malinga 0; Eng 201/8 - Malinga bowls full and straight and it is too good for Tredwell.

5.06pm - WICKET! Buttler run out (Senanayake) 17; Eng 199/7 - Buttler has been run out by Senanayake, but the crowd do not like it. The spinner takes the bails off without delivering the ball as Buttler strays out of his crease. Senanayake had warned him in his previous over not to do it, and as the laws allow, he has this time opted to run Buttler out. The crowd are booing. They don't like it, but Buttler has to go.

5.04pm - Malinga fails to grab the wicket Sri Lanka are after, but he will still bowl three of the last seven overs. England are 197 for six.

5pm - Malinga is back. England took just two from that last over from Senanayake.

4.55pm - Jordan ends England's seven-over wait for a boundary by getting back in his crease and cross-batting Mathews through midwicket. Powerful stuff.

4.51pm - England are 182 for six heading into the last 10 overs. Disaster almost strikes straight away, however, as Chris Jordan calls for a quick single that would have seen Buttler out with a direct-hit from cover.

4.48pm - England fail to score a run off the bat in the 39th over, although Mathews does allow four wides.

4.38pm - WICKET! Bopara b Mendis 17; Eng 170/6 - Bopara is bowled in strange circumstances. He rocks back to pull what appeared a half-tracker, but the ball skidded on through his legs. Bopara is left swishing at fresh air before the ball continued on into his stumps.

4.34pm - It has got a bit gloomy here and the lights are on.

4.24pm - It is the second drinks break and after 34 overs England are 158 for five. The pace of the wicket should lower expectations about what is a good score, although with Buttler and Bopara at the crease England are capable of some fireworks in these last 16 overs.

4.19pm - Buttler brings up the England 150 by thumping Malinga to the cover rope. It was a good ball, just missing the yorker length, but it was smashed.

4.09pm - WICKET! Morgan c Jayawardene b Mathews 17; Eng 142/5 - It has got a bit helter-skelter and now Morgan falls pulling Mathews to deep backward square-leg. England are in a bit of trouble now as Jos Buttler - star of the game at Lord's - comes to the crease.

4.07pm - CHANCE! - Bopara is living dangerously. He calls for a single but would have been out with a direct-hit at the non-striker's end despite a full-length dive. Next ball he wants another single, gets a long way down the wicket, but Morgan sends him back before diving for his own ground.

4.05pm - REVIEW! - Bopara's fate in the hands of the TV official again. Mathews wants another look at an lbw call that HawkEye reveals is too high.

4pm - REVIEW! - Sangakkara removes the bails as Ravi Bopara misses his first ball pushing forward. It is a close call, but the England man is safe.

3.58pm - WICKET! Cook c Sangakkara b Senanayake 56; Eng 136/4 - Sri Lanka get the captain. Cook tried to paddle a sweep and while he made contact the ball brushed his shoulder on the way through to allow Sangakkara to race back and take the catch. Another change of bowling works.

3.53pm - Eoin Morgan swipes Priyanjan over the midwicket rope. The area was vacant, so it was fairly risk-free, but he still hit it like a dream considering it was just his 13th ball.

3.50pm - Sri Lanka skipper Mathews is ringing the bowling changes. Dilshan is back on now. England's batsmen are not being allowed to settle on one bowler.

3.46pm - Cook gets an inside edge - that falls well short of Sangakkara but narrowly misses his stumps - to finish a tidy Mathews over. At halfway England have hit seven boundaries.

3.40pm - WICKET! Root c Sangakkara b Priyanjan 10; Eng 116/3 - The TV pictures confirm what the Sri Lankans thought. The ball thuds into Root's glove and pops up for Sangakkara to step forward and pouch. A change of bowling works again.

3.38pm - REVIEW! - Sri Lanka think they have Root caught behind off the glove sweeping. The initial decision is not out.

3.35pm - Malinga gets a yorker all wrong and Joe Root turns it to the fine-leg rope. That is the first boundary in seven overs.

3.31pm - FIFTY! Cook (69b 3x4 0x6) - Cook squirts Mathews away past square-leg for a single to reach his half-century.

3.21pm - WICKET! Ballance c&b Malinga 10; Eng 98/2 - Malinga returns to the attack and removes Ballance with his first ball. It was very similar to Bell's dismissal in that the ball apparently stopped in the pitch. It looked unganely though as Ballance somehow spooned the ball back to the bowler after reaching out wide of his off stump.

3.13pm - England have reached the first drinks break at 88 for one after 18 overs. Cook is unbeaten on 42 with new man Gary Ballance on four. Sri Lanka have looked to spin at both ends recently to try and slow the pace of the game up. Ashan Priyanjan is set to come on now with his slow turners.

3pm - WICKET! Bell c&b Mendis 37; Eng 76/1 - The first wicket falls from the last ball of the batting powerplay. Bell is too early on a drive he checks straight into the waiting hands of Mendis.

2.52pm - Kumar Sangakkara produces a direct-hit from just behind the stumps but Bell, sneaking a quick single, is safely home.

2.47pm - Ajantha Mendis comes into the attack and his leg-stump full-toss is punched to the boundary by Cook. England Head Coach Peter Moores called for improvements from his top order yesterday and the skipper, alongside Bell, are responding here. Mendis then darts one back through the defences of Bell, whose fortunate the ball bounces over his stumps.

2.41pm - Sachithra Senanayake, reported for a suspected illegal bowling action yesterday , is currently bowling.

2.38pm - CHANCE! - Bell, on 18, scoops a simple chance to Mahela Jayawardene at cover, only for the veteran to grass the opportunity. A big let-off. The right-hander then crunches a wide Nuwan Kulasekara delivery to the point boundary before driving the seamer through the covers. England are 42 without loss after nine overs.

2.17pm - Bell hits the first boundary of the day as he leans into a cover drive in typical style off Lasith Malinga. The Warwickshire man, on his home ground, has been more aggressive than Cook. Bell is 15, with his skipper on two, as England are 18 for none after five overs.

2.09pm - A sedate start so far as openers Alastair Cook and Ian Bell take five from the first two overs.

Pre-Play News

1.40pm - Both teams are unchanged from the thrilling Lord's match at the weekend. That means Sri Lanka retain spinner Sachithra Senanayake despite being reported for a suspect action at HQ. Captain Angelo Mathews said at the toss that the tourists never considered leaving him out despite the spotlight now on him.

1.35pm - ENGLAND WIN THE TOSS AND BAT. Cook thinks it will be a good track for batting and believes history shows that batting first here in Birmingham provides a "good advantage".

1.10pm - The players are all out on the field at present. England Head Coach Peter Moores has been in deep discussion with skipper Alastair cook while the other players warm up. Sri Lanka had an on-field huddle before starting their run throughs. Everyone means business.

1pm - Hello an welcome to live coverage of the fifth Royal London one-day international against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston. It's the series decider and the weather is pretty good.
