The explosive Jos Buttler scored the fastest international century at Lord’s but it was not enough for England as Sri Lanka edged out a seven-run victory to take the Royal London One-Day Series into a deciding match.

The 23-year-old produced a stunning display of power hitting and required just 61 balls to move to three figures, his first hundred on the world stage.

Coming in at 111 for five, the Lancashire wicketkeeper-batsman - with 11 fours and a quartet of maximums, appeared to be leading his side to an unlikely victory alongside Ravi Bopara, who contributed 51 in a stand of 133.

However, Buttler was run out in the final over by Lasith Malinga for 122 to end England's chances and deny them their joint second-highest run chase, ensuring Tuesday's fixture at Edgbaston is winner-takes-all.

Sri Lanka bounced back from their horror show at Emirates Old Trafford on Wednesday to post 300 for nine after losing the toss.

Kumar Sangakkara ensured there would be no repeat of their 67 all out at the home of cricket as he stroked his way to 112 and Tillakaratne Dilshan hit 71

England wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler hits out en route to a 61-ball ton - the fastest international century at Lord's - against Sri Lanka

On a sunny day in London, Alastair Cook’s decision to field seemed to be justified in the sixth over when Harry Gurney drew the edge from the recalled Kusal Perera and Chris Jordan did the rest at slip.

But England’s initial progress was to be shortlived as Dilshan and Sangakkara responded in trademark fashion with a classy second-wicket stand.

The experienced duo rotated the strike and provided attacking intent in a 30-over stay at the crease, with the former "Dilscooping" James Anderson for two successive fours and Sangakkara taking Joe Root for three consecutive boundaries along the way.

The pair were in a race to reach 50 first, Dilshan bringing up to his half-century and the hundred partnership a ball after Sangakkara secured his milestone.

When Dilshan was bowled attempting to scoop Anderson once more, Sangakkara moved to three figures but, after Gurney accounted for Mahela Jayawardene, the left-hander was stumped as a quicker James Tredwell delivery prized him out of the crease.

Skipper Angelo Mathews chipped in with a run-a-ball 30, but Sri Lanka’s late progress was checked by Jordan and Gurney, the latter returning figures of 4-55.

England’s reply suffered a double blow inside four overs as Lasith Malinga dismissed Cook lbw via a review and a hesitant Ian Bell edged the paceman to slip.

Gary Ballance almost followed caught behind on nought, only for a successful review to overturn the on-field decision, before he steadied the ship with Root in an 84-run third-wicket stand.

However, when Eoin Morgan followed the Yorkshire pair, who made 42 and 43 respectively, back to the pavilion, England were languishing on 111 for five.

But Buttler and Bopara combined and while the latter was happy to rotate the strike, the former was punishing anything short of full.

Buttler, powerful over extra-cover, needed just 37 balls to reach his first milestone and went from 50 to three figures in 24 deliveries to thrill the Lord’s faithful.

Five overs were remaining when Bopara top-edged a sweep and departed for 51, leaving Buttler in sole charge of the mission.

He brought up three figures and got England down to 12 off the final over, but that proved beyond Buttler as Malinga ran him out with the fourth ball to end England’s hopes of taking an unassailable lead to Birmingham.

Post-Match Quotes

On Jos Buttler's man-of-the-match performance and his partnership with Ravi Bopara, England skipper Alastair Cook said:“It was looking pretty bleak before those two got going and it was a great partnership.

"When you’re chasing 300 at Lord’s it’s very hard to defend. We didn’t quite get the first 20-odd overs right and that partnership was fantastic, (it) just couldn’t quite get us there.

"We know what a special talent Jose (Buttler) is and that was just brilliant batting.”

England Innings

Watch highlights of England's innings

6.37pm - RESULT! SRI LANKA WIN BY SEVEN RUNS; Tredwell 1, Anderson 0 - James Tredwell cannot get anything on a full, wide delivery from Malinga. The paceman then leaks just one off the final delivery to secure Sri Lanka a narrow win, taking the series into a deciding match on Tuesday.

6.34pm - WICKET! Buttler run out 121; Eng 292/7 - It proves one hurdle too many for Buttler, who digs out a yorker and runs, but Malinga races round to run him out.

6.32pm - REVIEW - The third umpire is asked for again for a run out, but Buttler is not out after Sangakkara fails to take the bails off in time.

6.31pm - WICKET! Jordan c Dilshan b Malinga 5; Eng 290/7 - Jordan smashes Malinga down Dilshan's throat at mid-on. The batsmen cross.

6.28pm - Buttler manages one off the first ball.

6.27pm - England need 20 off 12 balls. Buttler pierces the off-side field and gets four. Eight off the over leaves the hosts needing 12 off the final set of six to be bowled by Malinga.

6.16pm - CENTURY! Buttler (61b 9x4 4x6) - Buttler raises his bat to a huge round of applause. He has kept England in the game. What a knock!

6.11pm - Buttler is taking on full responsibility, clubbing Kulasekara for consecutive sixes over extra-cover and then a four. This is stunning hitting from the right-hander. Chris Jordan is the man with him.

6.05pm - WICKET! Bopara c Thirimanne b Mendis 51; Eng 244/6 - No sooner had Bopara gone to his milestone, he is heading back to the pavilion. A top-edge from an attempted sweep is caught at short fine-leg.

6.03pm - FIFTY! Bopara (44b 1x4 0x6) - Bopara guides a slower Malinga delivery to deep midwicket for a single that raises his half-century. He has been the perfect foil for the destructive Buttler.

5.54pm - These two in the middle are really putting the pressure on the Sri Lankans, who are cracking as a fielder lets a ball through his legs for another run. The communication and running between the duo is first class.

5.49pm - REVIEW - The third umpire is called into action after a direct-hit. However, Bopara is safely home.

5.45pm - CENTURY PARTNERSHIP - A superb piece of fielding by Ashan Priyanjan stops another boundary, but it does not prevent Buttler and Bopara's partnership moving into three figures.

5.41pm - Buttler is bringing the game back in the balance, hooking and pulling Malinga for six and four in consecutive deliveries. England move past 200 in the process. Fifty runs come from the powerplay.

5.29pm - FIFTY! Buttler (34b 7x4 1x6) - Buttler's rapid fifty comes up when he lifts Kulasekera over extra cover for his first maximum. Fifteen come from the over and England are on the charge.

5.20pm - Another fifty partnership, this time from Buttler and Bopara, keeps England in the mix with 15 overs remaining. Malinga is back into the attack, though.

5.11pm - He then takes the attack to Mendis and clobbers him over the covers for four twice in that set of six.

5.07pm - Buttler is trying to put the pressure back on Sri Lanka. The Lancashire wicketkeeper-batsman drives and scoops Mathews for back-to-back boundaries.

4.58pm - Buttler hits England's first boundary for 21 overs, reverse-sweeping Senanayake to the rope.

4.50pm - WICKET! Morgan st Sangakkara b Senanayake 12; SL 111/5 - England are in deep trouble now as Morgan is stumped by Sangakkara off Sachithra Senanayake. Ravi Bopara and Jos Buttler have a task on their hands.

4.43pm - WICKET! Root c Mendis b Mathews 43; Eng 107/4 - Root follows Ballance back to the pavilion for one run more after top-edging a short ball from the returning Mathews to Mendis at fine-leg. A soft dismissal.

4.36pm - Eoin Morgan starts positively and a single into the off-side takes England into three figures at the half-way point of the innings.

4.28pm - WICKET! Ballance c Sangakkara b Mendis 42; Eng 94/3 - Ballance's tidy innings comes to a tame end. The left-hander tries to reverse-sweep the spinner and only succeeds in feathering a catch behind to Kumar Sangakkara.

4.19pm - Ajantha Mendis, returning to the side today, is into his second over and the England pair at the crease are happy to milk the singles all around the wicket.

4.05pm - The fifty partnership between third-wicket pair Ballance and Root arrives just before drinks.

3.55pm - With both of them playing for the same county, you would think Root and Ballance would have a good understanding out in the middle. However, they get away with a mix-up when a poor throw from point misses the stumps.

3.45pm - Ballance and Root are steadying the ship, taking the score to 38 for two off 11 overs. Malinga's first spell is complete and he has figures of 2-8.

3.30pm - Ballance gets off the mark with a beautiful straight drive for four off Kulasekara. He and Yorkshire team-mate Joe Root need to build a partnership now. Malinga oversteps and then bowls Ballance with the free-hit.

3.17pm - REVIEW - Gary Ballance, on nought, is given out caught behind off Nuwan Kulasekara, but the left-hander reviews and the decision is overturned.

3.11pm - WICKET! Bell c Jayawardene b Malinga 7; Eng 10/2 - Malinga removes both openers. Ian Bell does not know whether to play or leave and edges to Mahela Jayawardene at first slip.

3pm - WICKET! Cook lbw Malinga 1; Eng 3/1 - England suffer a huge blow as Alastair Cook departs lbw to Lasith Malinga's first ball. The Sri Lankans required a review to overturn the original not-out decision from the umpire.

2.52pm - The players are back on the field and England's pursuit of 301 to win the Royal London One-Day Series starts here.

Sri Lanka Innings

Watch highlights of Sri Lanka's innings

2.22pm - END OF INNINGS! SL 300/9; Mendis 4, Malinga 0 - Ajantha Mendis slices the final ball of the innings to the vacant third-man boundary for four to help Sri Lanka post 300.

2.21pm - WICKET! Senanayake c Cook b Gurney 12; SL 296/9 - Gurney gets another as Senanayake skies to Cook at extra-cover.

2.15pm - WICKET! Priyanjan c Morgan b Gurney 9; SL 292/8 - Sachithra Senanayake lifts Jordan back over his head for six. Ashan Priyanjan tries to do the same to Gurney, but loops a simple catch to Morgan at point.

2.12pm - WICKET! Kulasekara b Jordan 0; SL 280/7 - Jordan's yorker breaches Nuwan Kulasekara's defences for a second wicket in four balls.

2.08pm - WICKET! Mathews c Anderson b Jordan 30; SL 279/8 - Mathews goes for one shot too many and finds Anderson at mid-on.

2.07pm - Mathews is playing a tidy little cameo, taking Gurney for two leg-side fours in as many balls. Sri Lanka are 279 for five with two overs remaining.

1.57pm - WICKET! Thirimanne c Ballance b Anderson 16; SL 261/4 - The third umpire is called into action to decide a catch taken by Ballance at short fine-leg. Thirimanne hooked an Anderson slower ball to the Yorkshire player, who got his hands between turf and ball.

1.43pm - Lahiru Thirimanne takes just six balls to collect his first boundary, lifting Anderson over mid-off. The bowler then needs treatment for a finger injury sustained during the delivery of his next ball.

1.30pm - WICKET! Sangakkara st Buttler b Tredwell 112; SL 233/4 - Tredwell gets his reward with the first ball of his last over, prizing Sangakkara out of his crease with a wide, quicker ball and Jos Buttler takes off the bails.

1.28pm - Gurney leaks 12 runs from his next set of six, with Mathews hitting him for two fours in three balls.

1.21pm - Gurney almost gets another in the powerplay, which brings two wickets and 24 runs. Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews inside-edges onto his pad and ball just evades the stumps. Can England keep the score below 300?

1.16pm - WICKET! Jayawardene c Anderson b Gurney 7; 217/3 - Just when Jayawardene shows some intent, he clubs a Gurney slower ball to Anderson at mid-off.

1.09pm - CENTURY! Sangakkara (95b 13x4 0x6) - The veteran flicks into the leg-side for a couple of reach his second milestone of the day. A fantastic century that sets Sri Lanka, who are 205 for two, up nicely for the final 12 overs.

1.07pm - Gurney is back on after Sri Lanka advance past 200. Mahela Jayawardene is alongside Sangakkara now. The right-hander is almost outfoxed by a Gurney slower ball, but the ball drops just short of Eoin Morgan at point.

12.55pm - WICKET! Dilshan b Anderson 71; SL 198/2 - England finally have a breakthrough! Just as I was praising Dilshan for his patience, he tries to scoop a full Anderson delivery that crashes into the stumps.

12.51pm - Sangakkara is targeting the leg-side off Root, clubbing him to cow corner for four before slashing to deep-midwicket for two. He is into the nineties and deserves three figures for this masterclass. At the other end, Dilshan is showing great patience.

12.45pm - Dilshan is down with cramp at the non-striker's end after colliding with Root. The spinner dived to stop a straight drive from Sangakkara and got tangled up with Dilshan, who also hit the turf. The batsman is back to his feet now.

12.40pm - Anderson is back into the attack, but he cannot stop the pair moving their stand past 150. Where does captain Cook turn to next?

12.32pm - Sangakkara is enjoying himself out there; his timing is impeccable. He launches Bopara over mid-off for another boundary. Twelve runs come from an expensive over.

12.23pm - Dilshan unsuccessfully Dilscoops Bopara, with the ball hitting him in the chest, before Sangakkara edges the Essex all-rounder through a vacant slip cordon for four more. Sri Lanka are approaching 150.

12.16pm - Dilshan's running causes him concern again. Cook hits the stumps from mid-on, but the right-hander's despairing dive sees him make his ground. England are craving a wicket here.

12.04pm - FIFTY AND CENTURY PARTNERSHIP! Dilshan (72b 4x4 0x6) - Dilshan steals a single into the off-side to reach 50 next ball, the run also taking the second-wicket stand into three figures.

12.03pm - FIFTY! Sangakkara (53b 7x4 0x6) - Sangakkara wins the race! A fine stop off his own bowling from Tredwell denies Dilshan the single required for a fifty. And now Sangakkara raises his bat after flicking the returning Jordan into the leg-side.

11.58am - Sangakkara finds the rope again, this time driving Bopara through the covers to take Sri Lanka into three figures in the 20th over. They are moving along nicely. He clips the medium-pacer through midwicket in his next over and is closing in on a half-century. Will he beat Dilshan to the milestone?

11.50am - Sangakkara uses his feet to clip Tredwell past a diving Gary Ballance at mid-on for four. England need a wicket here and Alastair Cook turns to Bopara.

11.43am - James Tredwell replaces Root, who swaps ends, and the latter is taken for three consecutive fours by Sangakkara. The left-hander hits two down the ground and, when the fielder goes back onto the mid-off rope, then drives the spinner through the covers. He is negotiating the field superbly.

11.35am - Sangakkara pulls Jordan to the rope for his side's first boundary in six overs. A single then heralds the fifty partnership between the second-wicket pair.

11.30am - Sangakkara relieves some pressure by advancing down the wicket and lifting Jordan over mid-off for a couple. Dilshan clumps Root into the leg-side for two, taking Sri Lanka past the total they made at Old Trafford four days ago.

11.24am - Things have gone a little quiet here after Dilshan entertained the crowd with his trademark shots. Jordan, a leading performer for England in this series, is into the attack and straying down the leg-side a little.

11.14am - Sri Lanka reach the end of the compulsory powerplay 46 for one. Root is introduced into the attack, replacing Anderson, and Kumar Sangakkara gets his first run off 13 balls. With Ryan Sidebottom out injured, Yorkshire fans will be happy with the tweet below!

11.06am - Dilshan is having some fun out there now! He Dilscoops Anderson three times in as many balls, finding the vacant fine-leg boundary on two occasions. The seamer then fires one into the right-hander, who backs away trying not to play a shot and loops the ball over Jos Buttler via his glove for two.

10.55am - Dilshan continues to play hit and run, but Joe Root's throw from mid-on is way off the stumps.

10.51am - WICKET! Perera c Jordan b Gurney 19; SL 26/1 - Perera tries to replicate his six from the previous over off Gurney, but is too early into the shot and edges to Chris Jordan at first slip.

10.45am - Perera powerfully pulls ball two of Harry Gurney's second over for the first maximum of the match. Bopara has another shy at the stumps from square-leg, only to miss on this occasion.

10.41am - Perera sends Dilshan back and picks up two overthrows as Ravi Bopara's throw deflects off the stumps into space. Sri Lanka are 18 without loss from three overs.

10.33am - James Anderson almost squares up Tillakaratne Dilshan first ball before Kusal Perera takes the seamer for boundaries either side of the wicket in successive deliveries.
