Nottinghamshire have recalled England limited-overs batsman Alex Hales from his month-long loan with Worcestershire after one game in order to face Northamptonshire from today.

The powerful 25-year-old right-hander was named in Notts’ XI for the LV= County Championship clash with Northants at Trent Bridge due to an elbow injury sustained by Steven Mullaney.

Mullaney was struck on the joint in a net session and will aim to return to fitness for Friday's NatWest T20 Blast opener against Lancashire Lightning.

"I felt a bit of pain in my back while I was bowling and put it down to cramp but the last ball I bowled tightened it a bit more so it's best for me to sit this one out," Mullaney told Notts’ website.

Against Northants Alex Hales will make his second championship appearance for Nottinghamshire this year, having had his loan cut short

"I don't want to aggravate it further so I'll rest up today and see how I feel on Monday."

Hales, whose loan was announced on May 2, featured for Worcestershire in the draw versus Glamorgan, making scores of 15 and 63 from number four. He was expected to represent the Division Two team, who are not in action during this round, in two more championship matches

"I'm pleased for Alex although it's obviously unfortunate for me to miss a game because I always want to be involved," Mullaney added.

"We all know what he's capable of and he'll be keen to get runs on the board."
