Kyle Coetzer has been named as Northants Steelbacks captain for the defence of their NatWest T20 Blast title this season.
The 30-year-old opening batsman has been elevated to the role after limited-overs skipper Alex Wakely suffered a season-ending Achilles injury during the Steelbacks’ pre-season trip to Barbados.
Coetzer has leadership experience as Scotland's captain and is set to lead his country against England in the Royal London one-day international in Aberdeen on Friday.
“I am very excited about the challenge of captaining the side in defence of the T20 title,” Coetzer told the club’s official website.
“We had a fantastic time in the competition last season and, hopefully, we can repeat that again this year. My previous captaincy experience should stand me in good stead.”
Northants head coach David Ripley added: “Kyle is a very level-headed lad, has a consistent personality and he will continue Alex’s calm style of captaincy.
“He has also captained Scotland in T20 cricket and we will benefit from that experience.”
Coetzer is set to lead the Steelbacks in their opening game against Yorkshire Vikings at Headingley on May 16.
