Glen Chapple claimed his 900th first-class wicket for Lancashire, who left it late to restrain Warwickshire on the second day of their LV= County Championship meeting at Emirates Old Trafford.

When dismissing Varun Chopra for 52 immediately before lunch, 40-year-old Chapple became the 15th player to reach the landmark haul for the county; Jack Simmons was the previous man to do so.

Chapple, who made his Red Rose debut in 1992, had to wait for the result of his lbw appeal against the visiting batsman before he could celebrate properly.

Umpire Peter Hartley gave him the nod and Warwickshire took lunch having reached 144 for two.

Chapple later removed Ateeq Javid, while Simon Kerrigan had Will Porterfield - who at one point carted a six off James Anderson into a neighbouring construction site - caught on 77.

Tom Smith claimed Laurie Evans’ wicket for 17, but Lancashire's attack toiled for most of the afternoon.

Warwickshire surpassed their hosts' first-innings total of 247 all out thanks to Ian Bell, who struck 75 off 162 balls - including eight fours and a six.

The home attack could not make any further headway until Smith had Chris Woakes caught behind by new boy Jos Buttler and Wayne White bowled Bell.

White got rid of Jeetan Patel soon after, the New Zealander feathering White behind for two.

Smith would strike once again before stumps, trapping Chris Wright lbw to register figures of 4-67.

Keith Barker and Oliver Hannon-Dalby added 25 between them before bad forced an early finish to day two, with Warwickshire on 319 for nine and taking a 69-run lead into the third act.
