Chris Woakes’ five wickets undermined Lancashire on day one of their LV= County Championship meeting with Warwickshire at Emirates Old Trafford.
Peter Moores, in his last match in charge of Lancashire before becoming England head coach, saw the Red Rose dismissed for 247 having opted to bat first, with the visitors reaching stumps untroubled at 63 without loss.
Paul Horton was the only member of the Lancashire side who batted with the necessary resolve to post a big first-innings total, the opener making 83 in 187 balls, while Warwickshire got just rewards for a disciplined bowling display.
Woakes will hope to have left an impression on the new national coach with 5-63, while Keith Barker also impressed by taking three wickets.
Barker sent down a testing initial spell with the new ball and picked up the first scalp of the day when Luis Reece gave wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose the first of five catches.

Andrea Agathangelou managed 48 but never gave the impression of permanence.
With Horton playing cautiously at the other end, he struck five boundaries to move the scoreboard along but was dropped on 40 by Ambrose.
The wicketkeeper then made amends, his error having cost just eight runs, when Agathangelou nicked Woakes on the stroke of lunch.
Lancashire resumed on 85 for two but Woakes and Ambrose combined again just two balls after the restart to send Ashwell Prince back for a duck.
Horton continued his steady progress, reaching 50 in 133 balls, with Luke Procter taking up the baton left by Agathangelou.
Procter managed a couple of clean hits before Ambrose missed a stumping chance off Jeetan Patel, but met a tame end on 37 when he turned Oliver Hannon-Dalby gently to square-leg.
Procter's dismissal came an over after the umpires changed an out of shape ball and the replacement was proving a boon for Warwickshire as Horton - who had finally threatened to throw off the shackles - was given lbw to Barker.
By then debutant Jos Buttler had flicked his first ball in Lancashire colours for four and added a commanding cut off Hannon-Dalby, but the innings subsided disappointingly after tea.
Beginning the session on 197 for five, they lost their last five wickets for 50 runs.
Tom Smith and Wayne White mustered just five between them, dismissed by Patel and Barker respectively, before Chapple and Buttler added a valuable 41 for the eighth wicket.
Unexpectedly it was the 40-year-old Chapple, not England's limited-overs star, who peppered the ropes in a brisk 29.
Both men were caught by Ambrose off Woakes, who was warming to the task after a steady start, and the all-rounder completed his five-for with a regulation dismissal of James Anderson.

Lancashire had 19 overs to strike back but Anderson, Chapple and Smith all laboured without luck.
Ireland captain Will Porterfield, recalled with Jonathan Trott taking a break from cricket, looked well in control as he compiled an unbeaten 30, with Varun Chopra equally solid for his 29.
