Opening batsman Keaton Jennings provided the backbone as Durham edged their way to 308 all out on the first day of their LV= County Championship clash with Somerset.

The reigning Division One champions were put in by the visitors at the Emirates Durham ICG, and were reduced to 54 for two in the 11th over as Scott Borthwick joined Mark Stoneman back in the pavilion.

However, Jennings' 80, which included 12 boundaries, laid the foundation for a fightback before he was caught at first slip off Lewis Gregory.

The 21-year-old prevailed where the men around him failed to do so despite making starts, but he eventually found support in the shape of Paul Collingwood and Gareth Breese.

Collingwood's 36 and a more measured 45 from Breese helped to steady the ship and pave the way for a solid finish to the innings as Breese and Jamie Harrison put on 65 for the eighth wicket.

Harrison was left stranded on 37 not out as Graham Onions and Chris Rushworth both departed without troubling the scorers, but it was Jennings' contribution which held the innings together.

He was one of four victims for Gregory, who also removed Stoneman, Collingwood and Rushworth on his way to figures of 4-59 off 20 overs.

Peter Trego also took 3-61 off 21 overs with Jamie Overton, Craig Meschede and Johann Myburgh claiming a wicket apiece.

Former England batsman Marcus Trescothick was dropped in the day’s last over as Somerset reached stumps on seven without loss.
