Overseas signing Peter Siddle has been ruled out of Nottinghamshire’s opening LV= County Championship fixture against Lancashire due to visa issues.

The Australian paceman is still awaiting the necessary paperwork and, as a result, not expected to arrive at Trent Bridge until next Tuesday, meaning the 29-year-old is unavailable for Sunday’s opener.

Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell expects Siddle, who has played 57 Tests, 17 one-day internationals and two Twenty20s for his country, to be included in his side to face Middlesex at Lord’s from April 13.

Newell told the county’s official website: “Peter wanted to play against Lancashire and we want him in the team but the speed of the process is out of our hands, which is frustrating.

“Everything that could be done has been done but we’ll get him in the side to face Middlesex at Lord's.”

Newell has a wealth of bowling options at his disposal for the clash against the Red Rose, with Andre Adams, Harry Gurney, Luke Fletcher, Ajmal Shahzad, Andy Carter and Jake Ball all available for selection.
