James Harris is itching to get the season started as the LV= County Championship looms ever closer.
Harris’ Middlesex will be one of the first teams in action as they make the trip to the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground on Sunday to face Sussex.
And the seamer is hopeful that his side can start 2014 as they did the last campaign, when they won their first two games and did not taste defeat until their ninth outing.
In a wide-ranging interview with ecb.co.uk , where he also discusses county team-mates Sam Robson and Steven Finn as well as his own injury problems and international aspirations, Harris said: “It’s always an exciting time of the year. A lot of work has gone into this. It’s all building up nicely for Sunday in Hove.
“It’s always ideal when you make a fast start. Starts don’t get much better than that (last season). If we can do that in a similar vein then it can lead us through what will hopefully be a very successful season all round.”
After their fast start, Middlesex tailed away towards the end of the campaign. They won just one of their last five fixtures and eventually finished down in fifth when a title challenge had seemed possible.
“We felt disappointed (with where we finished) having been around the top three all year,” Harris added.
“We didn’t play our best cricket for the last three weeks of the season which cost us a couple of places.
“But we feel we have a very good team. We played some very good cricket last year and I really do think that if we start as we have the last couple of years and try to carry that through a bit better hopefully we can build on last season.”
