England’s World Twenty20 campaign and winter ended on a low note as they lost to Netherlands by 45 runs at Chittagong.
A narrow defeat to South Africa on Saturday meant England, like today’s opponents, could not progress to the semi-finals in Bangladesh.
Despite that, Stuart Broad’s side looked in good spirits as they restricted the Dutch, who also shocked England at the 2009 World T20, to 133 for five.
Yet England, playing their first day game in this tournament, failed to adjust to the conditions and faltered to 88 all out in the 18th over.
An excellent Netherlands display in the field, featuring an array of fine catches, denied boundaries - just four were struck - meant only three England players reached double figures.
Seamers Mudassar Bukhari and Logan van Beek shared six wickets while fellow seamer Timm van der Gugten was also miserly.
Michael Swart and Stephan Myburgh plundered 32 from the game’s first three overs but, after Broad ousted Swart, the innings gradually lost momentum.
Although Myburgh and Wesley Barresi made 39 and 48 respectively, Ravi Bopara and Chris Jordan in particular kept the Dutch in check.
England, who won the toss, again missed several chances in the field, but Jordan went a long way to atoning with a stunning right-handed catch.
Netherlands’ 133 for five nevertheless proved a winning score and the fact that England finish above the Dutch in Group One on net run-rate will offer little comfort to Broad and Co.
Match Scorecard/ Ball-By-Ball Commentary
Post-Match Presentation
Mudassar Bukhari is man of the match for his brilliant bowling that merited figures of 3-12.
England captain Stuart Broad: "The bowling and fielding were okay but we lacked a bit of hunger with the bat.
"It’s up to the players to deliver. We didn’t and we have to take responsibility for that."
Netherlands skipper Peter Borren: "We had some good plans and I think we executed them. I couldn’t be prouder to captain this team.
"We’ve played against these guys before so that gave us a bit of confidence."
England Innings
1.33pm - NETHERLANDS WIN BY 45 RUNS! WICKET! Parry run out 1; England 88 all out; Tredwell 8 - Tredwell chips just out of cover’s reach, resulting in a mix-up that sees Stephen Parry well short of his ground. Netherlands have shocked England for the second time at a World Twenty20, having first done so at Lord’s in 2009.
1.30pm - WICKET! Broad c Barresi b Bukhari 4; Eng 86/9 - Stuart Broad swings at a slower ball, a weapon regularly used in this innings, and feathers through to the keeper.
1.26pm - James Tredwell, advancing to Ahsan and edging over point, gets England’s first four in almost an hour. At the end of the over England require an improbable 49 from 18 balls.
1.23pm - WICKET! Jordan c Swart b van Beek; Eng 76/8 - Another fine catch hampers England as Swart, running in from long-off, dives low and holds on.
1.18pm - WICKET! Bopara c Seelaar b van Beek 18; Eng 74/7 - Bopara and Jordan accumulate ones and twos for two overs before Bopara goes after van Beek and Pieter Seelaar keeps his composure inches from the midwicket boundary. Jordan denies the seamer, who has replaced Borren, a hat-trick.
1.11pm - Bopara and Chris Jordan take five singles from an Ahsan over, after which England need 75 from 42 deliveries.
1.03pm - CHANCE & WICKET! Bresnan run out 5; Eng 52/6 - Borren doesn’t accept what would have been a regulation return catch as Bopara survives. Yet later in the over Bukhari’s pinpoint throw from the boundary finds Bresnan short of his ground.
12.56pm - WICKET! Buttler c Seelaar b van Beek 6; Eng 42/5 - Buttler has been building patiently, but he can’t resist Logan van Beek’s slow bouncer and picks out the fielder at deep midwicket. Ravi Bopara and Tim Bresnan have it all to do now.
12.48pm - WICKET! Moeen c T Cooper b Borren 3; Eng 32/4 - Following economical overs from Bukhari and spinner Ahsan Malik, Moeen falls to Borren’s first ball in identical fashion to fellow left-hander Lumb’s dismissal. England are in a spot of bother.
12.35pm - WICKET! Morgan c Borren b van der Gugten 6; Eng 26/3 - Morgan clips van der Gugten to the midwicket rope, but then edges straight to Dutch captain Peter Borren stationed wide at slip. Moeen Ali and Jos Buttler need to rebuild here.
12.28pm - WICKET! Hales b Bukhari 12; Eng 19/2 - Hales gets the only run from van der Gugten’s over before having the top of his off stump clipped by Bukhari, who is on a hat-trick. Eoin Morgan lets a disappointing hat-trick ball pass well outside off stump, but the over costs just two.
12.22pm - WICKET! Lumb c T Cooper b Bukhari 6; Eng 18/1 - After Hales guides Mudassar Bukhari behind square on the off side for four, Lumb is caught at cover to end the over.
8 - England have won eight & lost one of the T20Is that they've required fewer than 140 runs to win (loss v West Indies, Sept. 2011). Chase.

12.12pm - Alex Hales and Michael Lumb take spinner Michael Swart for eight in the opening over of the reply, including a four down the ground from the former. Reliable seamer Timm van der Gugten is more economical in the next.
Netherlands Innings
11.58am - END OF INNINGS! Netherlands 133/5; Bukhari 1, B Cooper 0 - Jordan, who struck Ben Cooper on the helmet with a bouncer, goes for a mere two runs in the final over. England have limited the Dutch to 27 for three in the last quarter of the innings. Despite a few missed chances, that was a good overall showing from Broad’s side.
11.54am - WICKET! Barresi b Jordan 48; Ned 131/5 - The right-hander fails to connect with a swing to leg and has his furniture comprehensively rearranged.
11.51am - CHANCE & WICKET! Borren c Parry b Broad 13; Ned 131/4 - Barresi smites Broad over the extra-cover rope before Buttler squanders a run-out opportunity to oust Borren when he breaks the stumps with his elbow before taking the throw. It matters little as Borren spoons a catch to mid-off later in the over.
11.46am - Aside from Peter Borren’s uppercut four off Broad, the Dutch still struggle to score as Jordan follows his blinder with an over costing just three. Netherlands are 118 for three with two overs left.
Could be THE catch of the tournament by Chris Jordan to dismiss Tom Cooper. One handed running back. Brilliant #wt20

11.36am - WICKET! Cooper c Jordan b Broad 8; Ned 110/3 - Brilliant catch! Cooper goes aerial over cover and Jordan, running towards the boundary, holds a ‘worldie’ with his left hand and, for good measure, catches his falling sunglasses in his right.
11.34am - Bopara completes an excellent allocation of 1-15 as England continue to restrict their opponents, who are 110 for two with four overs to go.
11.28am - CHANCE! - Barresi lifts Parry over extra-cover for four but the spinner and Bopara otherwise keep the batsmen in check as a leaping Broad at backward point can only get a finger on a half-chance. With Netherlands into three figures, Alex Hales shells a tough but regulation opportunity on the midwicket boundary to reprieve Tom Cooper off Bresnan.
11.16am - WICKET! Myburgh c Hales b Bopara 39; Ned 84/2 - Having become the tournament’s leading scorer and raised a fifty partnership at the end of the previous over, Myburgh holes out to deep backward square-leg from a Bopara full-toss. Although that was his slower ball, it was a lucky strike.
11.12am - CHANCE! - Tredwell and Ravi Bopara send down tight overs as the Dutch reach the half-way point of their innings on 76 for one. Tredwell then lures Barresi out of his ground from a leg-side wide but the right-hander grounds his bat in his crease fractionally before Jos Buttler can break the stumps.
11.02am - CHANCE! - After a good Tredwell over, Stephen Parry starts with a long-hop that Barresi pulls aerially and Michael Lumb, just in from the midwicket rope, ‘tips over the bar’ for six. It was a tough opportunity. No fielder has a chance when Myburgh slog-sweeps for a mighty maximum later in the over.
10.54am - James Tredwell is the fifth bowler to be used in five overs. Wesley Barresi announces himself by cutting the spinner to the rope. Broad continues and is uppercut for four by Myburgh in an otherwise tidy over. The score at the end of the powerplay is 47 for one.
10.47am - WICKET! Swart c Parry b Broad 13; Ned 34/1 - Skipper Stuart Broad takes over from Bresnan and forces Swart to chip an easy catch to mid-on.
10.43am - Chris Jordan replaces Moeen and starts with a wide. Swart and Myburgh then each get a leg-side four before the over ends with four leg-byes. Netherlands are 32 for none from three.
10.33am - The dangerous Stephan Myburgh makes his intentions clear in the first over, pulling Moeen Ali for two consecutive fours and hitting another down the ground. Michael Swart gets off the mark by striking Tim Bresnan past mid-on and to the boundary.
