New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum steered his side to victory by six wickets over Netherlands with a brilliant half-century in Chittagong.

The destructive batsman struck 65, hitting three sixes and four fours in his 45-ball stay, to boost his side’s prospects of progressing from Group Two.

His innings gave the Black Caps impetus just when they appeared to be getting bogged down in pursuit of Netherlands' moderate 151 for four, and they got home with an over to spare.

The Associate side remain winless in the Super 10 stage but, as against South Africa, came out in credit against well-fancied opponents.

Peter Borren, a former New Zealand Under-19 player, propped up the Dutch effort with his top Twenty20 international score of 49, while Tom Cooper fired an unbeaten 40.

Netherlands seamer Timm van der Gugten claimed 3-30, but reasonable contributions from Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and Corey Anderson supported McCullum’s decisive effort.

The result meant England had to beat the Proteas at the same ground later in the day to have a chance of reaching the semi-finals with victory over the Dutch on Monday.

Brendon McCullum guides his New Zealand team towards victory over Netherlands with 65 that keeps them in contention for the semi-finals
