Zimbabwe thrashed United Arab Emirates by five wickets in Sylhet to keep alive their hopes of progressing to the Super 10 stage of the World Twenty20.

Having lost to Ireland in their opening match, Brendan Taylor’s side needed to win in comprehensive fashion to stand any chance of topping Group B on net run-rate and qualifying for the next round.

And they did just that, Sean Williams taking 3-15 with his left-arm spin to restrict UAE to 116 for nine.

Elton Chigumbura smashes his way to a rapid 51 off only 23 balls to keep Zimbabwe's World Twenty20 Super 10 hopes alive with a five-wicket Group B win against United Arab Emirates in Sylhet

The chase was far from straightforward initially, with Taylor and Williams amongst those to fall early as Zimbabwe slumped to 34 for four.

When Vusi Sibanda was dismissed for 15 in the 10th over to leave the score 63 for five, UAE still harboured hope of recording a first win of the tournament.

But Elton Chigumbura smashed 53 off just 21 balls - clearing the ropes three times in the process - as he and Timycen Maruma saw Zimbabwe home with more than six overs to spare.

That took the Test-playing nation top of Group B courtesy of their run-rate, but only a narrow Netherlands victory against Ireland in the final match today would see Zimbabwe progress.
