Eoin Morgan is confident England have what it takes to go all the way in the World Twenty20

Eoin Morgan believes yesterday’s dramatic victory over West Indies showed England have what it takes to go all the way in Bangladesh at the World Twenty20.

Captaining the side in the absence of the injured Stuart Broad, Morgan oversaw a five-run triumph underpinned by welcome runs at the top of the order from Nottinghamshire duo Alex Hales and Michael Lumb, along with an explosive all-round contribution by Chris Jordan.

Eoin Morgan believes England's Twenty20 team will take confidence from a fine display in all departments against West Indies in Barbados

The win was ultimately a consolation as the hosts took the three-match rubber 2-1 but, having prevailed by the same margin in the preceding one-day international series, Morgan feels the green shoots of recovery following a difficult winter in Australia are very much in evidence.

“I think we’re starting to improve and finding the direction we need to go in,” he told ecb.co.uk

“Guys are starting to perform and, turning over the world champions, we’ll take some big positives from that.”

Asked whether these positive signs could provide the foundations for a successful tilt at the tournament England and Morgan won in 2010, the Middlesex batsman added: “I certainly believe so. We’ve seen the attributes that the guys have.

“It’s everything you need in Twenty20 cricket and if we continue to improve like we have done in the last two games there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be in the mix.”

Morgan was particularly buoyed by the collective nature of a display in which the batting, seam and spin departments all fired to good effect.

“Since the last game we’ve progressed and improved quite a lot in things we said we would do, starting with the batting,” he said.

“The two Notts boys up front were outstanding, Michael Lumb in particular showed his real class.

“We stuttered a little bit in the middle but I think that was the nature of the wicket. It was hard to get going.

“Then towards the end Chris Jordan was fantastic. Right from the first ball he struck it like a dream.

“In that regard we improved in our first six overs batting and the top four contributed more than we have in recent times.

“In our bowling we got off to a fantastic start. We looked to take wickets early and we did, Jade (Dernbach) and Jords, and the experienced head of James Tredwell was really needed there.

“We’ll take a lot of confidence from this game and are looking forward to Bangladesh.”
