Eoin Morgan reflects on West Indies' win
Stand-in skipper Eoin Morgan believes England are showing signs of improvement despite the five-wicket loss to West Indies in Barbados.
With the game appearing to be in the balance, Darren Sammy strode out to the crease and smashed an unbeaten 30 from just nine balls to take his side to a series success.
The defeat left England 2-0 down with one to play before flying to Bangladesh for the World Twenty20, but there were some moments of encouragement.
Having slipped to 26 for three, Jos Buttler and Alex Hales performed admirably to help set the foundation for 152 for seven, with Buttler scoring a career-best Twenty20 international score of 67.
And despite West Indies - led by the always-dangerous Chris Gayle - smashing their way to 48 without loss, England fought their way back into the contest with impressive bowling, led by Ravi Bopara, who returned 1-10 with the wicket of dangerman Gayle.
Morgan is hopeful that England can now iron out their remaining flaws as they head to Bangladesh with hopes of regaining the World T20 trophy they won at the Kensington Oval in 2010.
"Being 30 for three after six overs puts us on the back foot,” said Morgan, who was standing in for the injured Stuart Broad in the contest.
"To get to 150 from there, I thought, was a great effort.
"Jos and Alex played particularly well, given the circumstances. Jos just continues to flourish. He's absolutely loving life at the moment, in fantastic form.
"I think it leaves us with a lot more positives than the other day (when England lost by 27 runs).
"We fought really well tonight, bowled and batted - in the middle overs and towards the end - much better.
"We showed a lot of character, which is great. That will give us great confidence going into the Twenty20 World Cup."
Morgan believes England have many of the constituent parts to be competitive in the impending global tournament in Bangladesh, if only they can address their issues against the new ball.
"I think we have enough power in the tank, but we're just faltering at the very start," he said.
"Finding the balance between being really positive and not losing wickets is difficult ... and the margin for error when momentum is against you is very, very small."
One possible remedy might be to deploy Ian Bell in the top three, following his addition to the squad as a replacement for the injured Joe Root.
But Morgan said: "Belly's only arrived very recently, four days ago, so he's just catching up to speed at the moment.
"He needs to get balls under his belt (in the nets) before we'll look at him."
