High expectations for England trio

Andrew Gale believe Yorkshire's England contingent will be more determined than ever to enjoy county success early in the forthcoming season.

A 5-0 Ashes defeat has left many place up for grabs in the Test XI ahead of this summer's meetings with Sri Lanka and India.

As a result, players around the country will be desperate for early-season returns as they aim for a spot in cricket's premier format.

And Gale believes the likes of Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Tim Bresnan - who all took part in that disappointing loss - will have added motivation.

He said: "There's going to be a lot of places up for grabs now in the England side. Them guys have got to come back and they've got a point to prove really.

"They want the England shirt, so they're going to be giving it their all. The addition of those four guys coming back is only going to leave us with a stronger side.

"Even lads who probably haven't had a sniff of England for years, they're saying 'you never know' ... people like Eoin Morgan turning down IPL and I think we've got them third game of the season."

Gale brushed off concerns that any mental frailties will have crept in, insisting they are not the sort of players who shy away from challenges,

He added: "They're all young enough that whatever happened this winter they'll be better off for the experience.

"They are not the sort of guys who'll go into their shells. They'll come back, stick their chests out and they'll get on with the job."
