Sri Lanka A's batsmen produced a fine riposte after Chris Woakes had led England Lions to a impressive first-innings score in the third and final 'Test'.

Woakes, well supported by Scott Borthwick's 99, struck a superb 137 as the tourists racked up 461 all out.

Sri Lanka were to respond in fine style, however, as Upul Tharanga hit an unbeaten century in a close-of-play 166 for one.

Buoyed by beginning the day with their stand already at 150, Woakes and Borthwick quickly picked up where they left off.

It was not long before the skipper added a further accolade to a fine individual tour, reaching three figures to complement wickets and a 92 not out during the rubber thus far.

Borthwick, too, has prospered with the bat on the trip and did so once again during a fine knock.

A hundred would have been well deserved yet, unfortunately, he was harshly given lbw to Vishwa Fernando one short of the landmark.

However, Borthwick could take plenty of pride from a knock featuring 15 fours and spanning 161 deliveries.

Undeterred by losing his long-time partner, Woakes pressed on and accelerated England’s total beyond 400.

With 16 boundaries to his name in a 232-ball stay, the Warwickshire man finally departed to Suraj Randiv.

The off-spinner seemed to take confidence from that, ousting Liam Plunkett for an aggressive 39, Simon Kerrigan and Tymal Mills quickly afterwards. Those scalps ensured Randiv ended with figures of 5-107.

A good day continued for the Lions thereafter, Graham Onions breaking through when trapping Dimuth Karunaratne lbw.

The pitch appeared to flatten out after there was some early movement with the new ball, however, as Tharanga and Madawa Warnapura prospered.

It was the former, in particular, who impressed when showing great fluency to reach 102 not out.

Warnapura was decidedly more circumspect but proved the perfect foil for his captain, facing 129 balls for 47 not out.
