Robson staying in the present

Sam Robson is remaining grounded despite his winter of runs continuing with another century in England whites.

Robson was the star of the show on the England Performance Programme’s trip to Australia just before Christmas, prompting many to tip him as a future senior opener.

He has done little to dispel such thoughts, too, while in Sri Lanka with the Lions.

Today, in particular, he shone as his superb 142 put the second-string in position to seal a series triumph against Sri Lanka A.

Robson told ecb.co.uk: “I have felt pretty good over the last 12 months and hopefully I can just try to keep doing some good things and see how I go.

“I don’t really think about any of that (a place in the Test team). I have just got to keep trying to do my best.

“I just enjoy being on trips like this; we have got seven Test players in our squad and just playing around guys like that has been really enjoyable.

“When I get back to Middlesex, I’ll do my best there and see how I go.”

For now, though, Robson can take great comfort from helping the Lions into a position of strength in the second of three ‘Tests’.

His innings, combined with 99 not out from James Taylor, ensured the tourists ended on 291 for four in reply to Sri Lanka’s 289.

“It was good and I am really pleased,” he added. “We were pretty happy with the day yesterday but we knew if we didn’t back it up with the bat today, it would be some hard work wasted.

“It was good batting with Taylz; we just tried to rotate the strike and put the bad ball away. Thankfully we grinded them down a little bit and we are in a pretty good position.”

The aim now is to significantly build upon a two-run lead and follow up their win in the opening game at Kandy.

“It’s a good wicket,” he said. “It’s starting to take more turn so I think it will spin more and more as the game goes on.

“From our point of view it is important to try and get as many as we can in the first innings. We have just gone past them so hopefully we can try and bat well for another session or two tomorrow and go from there.

“In the last game we had a lead in the first innings and that sets you up for the rest of the game.”
