Fisher bullish ahead of knockout phase

Matthew Fisher believes England are clicking into gear at just the right time as the Under-19s World Cup enters the knockout stages.

Big wins over hosts the United Arab Emirates and New Zealand have come either side of a heartbreaking one-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka for the young guns.

It is hardly surprising, therefore, that Fisher is confident England can progress further if they refine some aspects of their game.

Will Rhodes' side will start their knockout-stages campaign against India and Fisher has taken plenty of confidence from yesterday’s 115-run win over the Black Caps.

He told ecb.co.uk: “If we click as a batting unit scoring at the start, in the middle and towards the end of an innings we could get a really high score.

“It was a massive win (over New Zealand) which should give us momentum going into the quarter-final against India on Saturday.”

A huge score was not necessary versus New Zealand, with 229 proving sufficient on a difficult surface.

Fisher added: “We played on the same pitch today as the last match and it was slower which made it difficult for the batsmen to get their hands through the ball.

“There was also some swing with the new ball which helped the bowlers. That’s why it was such a good batting performance; the boys showed a lot of character, kept wickets in hand then accelerated in the final few overs.”
