Brendon McCullum's brilliant 224 and some impressive quick bowling from Trent Boult ensured New Zealand took a stranglehold on the first Test against India in Auckland.

Kiwi captain McCullum began with 143 to his name on day two at Eden Park and went on to make his second-highest Test score as his side posted an imposing 503 all out.

New Zealand paceman Trent Boult ensures India suffered a torrid start to their first innings in response to the hosts' 503 all out

Boult then took over, removing Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara inside the opening over, before India mounted a recovery of sorts to close on 130 for four.

It was a second excellent day for the Black Caps, fresh from beating their visitors 4-0 in the recent one-day international series.

McCullum was the aggressor with the bat and also in the field, but overnight partner Corey Anderson could not join him in triple figures as he was bowled Ishant Sharma for 77.

Ishant also ousted BJ Watling on his way to 6-134, but breezy contributions of 28 and 23 respectively from Tim Southee and Ish Sodhi helped to lift New Zealand beyond 500 as their captain fell one run shy of his format best.

India made a torrid start to their response as Dhawan edged the second ball of the innings to the third slip, with Pujara nudging one behind four balls later.

Virat Kohli found second slip off Southee as the tourists lurched to 10 for three and when Murali Vijay was cleaned up by Neil Wagner it was 51 for four.

Rohit Sharama reached the close with 67 to his name alongside Ajinkya Rahane, having added an unbroken 79 for the fifth wicket, but India remain 174 shy of their follow-on target.
