James Tredwell marked his recall with two key wickets as England threatened to seize control of the final NatWest Series one-day international with New Zealand at Trent Bridge.
Playing in place of the rested Graeme Swann, the Kent off-spinner became the first bowler in the series to dismiss Martin Guptill and also had Brendon McCullum caught behind as New Zealand - already 2-0 up in the three-match rubber - slipped to 122 for six in pursuit of 288.
A fifty stand between Ross Taylor and Nathan McCullum kept New Zealand hopes alive as the game moved towards its conclusion, but the latter then fell to Tim Bresnan for 28.
England’s total of 287 for six was underpinned by Ian Bell’s classy 82 and sensationally boosted by Jos Buttler, who demonstrated outstanding power, poise and audacity en route to 47 not out from 16 balls.
New Zealand Innings
8:44pm - WICKET! N McCullum c Broad b Bresnan 28; NZ 175/7 - This could be a killer blow for the Black Caps. McCullum attempts to attack a back-of-a-length delivery from Bresnan and is well caught by Broad, running back from mid-off.
8:38pm - Ravi Bopara is finding plenty of swing and boasts figures of 0-10 from three overs. It’s time for our final drinks break, with New Zealand requiring 115 from 96 balls.
8:30pm - Taylor absolutely mullers a slog-sweep off Root to pick up six. He and McCullum are keeping New Zealand’s hopes alive.
8:23pm - Another accomplished off-side stroke from McCullum, this time off Root, adds four to the Black Caps total. Taylor subsequently nurdles one fine and the score reads 154 for six at the end of the 30th over.
8:12pm - Tredwell gives up a rare four when Nathan McCullum drives confidently through cover. Taylor remains at the other end, but New Zealand now have a mountain to climb.
8:02pm - WICKET! Franklin c Cook b Broad 7; Eng 122/6 - But New Zealand have lost another wicket - and this is good captaincy from Alastair Cook. After seeing James Franklin play aerially through the off side, England’s captain positions himself at short gully and is swiftly picked out!
7:55pm - Stuart Broad, expensive in his first spell, returns and improves his figures with an over yielding just two. New Zealand cannot afford to lose another wicket any time soon.
7:42pm - WICKET! B McCullum c Buttler b Tredwell 6; NZ 111/5 - Nelson does for McCullum! After reverse-sweeping Tredwell for four, New Zealand's captain is caught behind on the cut.
7:39pm - Taylor and Brendon McCullum will know their alliance is now key. Both men have been becalmed thus far.
7:25pm - WICKET! Munro c Buttler b Bresnan 0; NZ 96/4 - England are firmly on top now! Colin Munro bags a golden duck when pushing loosely outside off. That’s a deserved wicket for Bresnan, who has bowled with good discipline this evening.
7:21pm - WICKET! Williamson lbw Root 19; NZ 96/3 - A chance goes begging from the young Yorkshireman’s second ball. Williamson found fresh air with an uncharacteristically agricultural swipe, but Jos Buttler was unable to effect the stumping. It matters little. Later in the over, Williamson is struck dead in front attempting to repeat a pulled four! Root sprints away in celebration a la Monty Panesar; that's his first one-day international wicket!
7:18pm - Still no boundaries for Kane Williamson or Ross Taylor, although New Zealand can afford a rebuilding phase following their brisk start. Here comes Joe Root...
7:07pm - The departure of Guptill has understandably slowed New Zealand down. Tim Bresnan has bowled two economical overs and is about to start his third.
6:57pm - WICKET! Guptill b Tredwell 38; Eng 70/2 - Oh yes! James Tredwell is introduced for the final over of the mandatory powerplay and picks up the key wicket! Guptill is lured forward by a looping off-break that spins through the gate and takes the top of middle stump. Lovely stuff!
6:50pm - Broad sends down a bumper and is pulled over fine-leg for six by Guptill, who then collects four more through the covers. Worrying signs for England.
6:45pm - Guptill really does look in wonderful touch. He pulls Finn high over square-leg for four before flicking a wayward delivery down to the fence at fine-leg. New Zealand end the seventh over with 51 on the board after the opener middles an off-drive to register his fifth boundary.
6:39pm - WICKET! Ronchi c Trott b Broad 22; NZ 39/1 - Ronchi’s streaky start continues as he collects unconvincing fours off Broad through mid-on and third man. It will continue no longer, however. Another mis-timed pull provides Jonathan Trott with the simplest of catches at mid-on.
6:27pm - Guptill is off the mark in authoritative fashion, thrashing a wide ball from Finn through the covers. An effortless clip to the midwicket rope follows and New Zealand are off to a bit of a flier in pursuit of 288.
6:22pm - MISSED CHANCE - There is immediate outswing for Stuart Broad, whose first ball is sliced over gully for four by Luke Ronchi. The opener looks to repeat the trick next ball and enjoys some fortune as Eoin Morgan only gets his fingertips to the ball at backward point. It did fly quickly to the fielder.
6:19pm - Finn sends down two leg-side wides in an otherwise quiet opening over that sees the in-form Martin Guptill - twice an unbeaten centurion in this series - face five legal deliveries without getting off the mark.
6:14pm - How will New Zealand respond to Jos Buttler's brilliant blitz? It's time to find out. Over to you Steven Finn...
England Innings
5:38pm - END OF INNINGS - Eng 287/6; Buttler 47* - This is remarkable from Buttler, who collects two more sixes down the ground and over cover. The final ball of the innings is dropped short and a forehand smash for two takes Buttler to 47 from 16 deliveries. His outstanding cameo has helped England add 76 in the last four overs. Their total now looks a competitive one.
5:33pm - WICKET! Morgan run out 49; Eng 272/6 - He may have been a little overshadowed by Buttler, but Morgan is now firing on all cylinders too. He smears Southee over the long-off fence to reach 49. Hang on, now he’s out, caught short by a terrific direct hit from cover. Buttler is back on strike with three deliveries remaining.
5:29pm - McClenaghan has rather lost his way, perhaps unsettled by Buttler’s brilliance. The seamer oversteps to bring a free-hit and is then no-balled again, this time for height. The next delivery is a wide and edges either side of the wicketkeeper from Buttler heap further misery on New Zealand. Morgan then picks up another maximum over long-on to bring up a stunning fifty stand. The last two overs have brought 42 and England are 265 for five with six balls to come.
5:22pm - Hold on to your hats: it’s time for The Jos Buttler Show! The youngster swipes a short delivery from Mills over the midwicket fence before bringing out his trademark scoop to collect four more. The fun continues as a full-toss is flicked between the two fielders positioned in the deep on the leg side. We then witness some sort of reverse-ramp from Buttler ...which clears short third man for a fourth boundary in succession! After a dot-ball, Buttler plays cross-batted down the ground to make it 22 from the over. Wonderful batting and just what England required.
5:15pm - This innings may not have gone entirely to plan, but England will surely be happy to have Morgan and Jos Buttler together at this stage. The left-hander provides a much-needed lift by swinging McClenaghan high over long-on for six. That was right in the slot and punished accordingly. England have 223 with three overs to come.
5:10pm - WICKET! Bopara c Taylor b Williamson 28; Eng 210/5 - Bopara aims a slog-sweep at Williamson, but succeeds only in picking out Ross Taylor at deep midwicket.
5:06pm - An abysmal piece of fielding from Southee at short fine-leg enables Morgan to collect a single. I'm afraid that was real village green stuff as the seamer went down in a heap but missed the ball. Southee is then beaten by a fine sweep, which means Williamson’s latest over yields 11. The slog is now on!
4:58pm - Mills is back and gets punished for a dreadful wide delivery as Morgan stretches his arms out to pierce the off-side field.
4:54pm - Williamson hustles through another tight over and England really need to accelerate now.
4:46pm - Bopara just about clears the infield at cover to collect three off Southee. Williamson has once again proven infuriatingly economical from an England point of view. He ends his sixth over with figures of 0-22, having bowled half his allocation thus far in the batting powerplay. England are 173 for four after 40.
4:37pm - And now Eoin Morgan rides his luck, mis-cuing a swipe at Williamson only for the ball to drop safely on the off side.
4:35pm - MISSED CHANCE - Ravi Bopara almost pops up a catch to short cover and benefits from further good fortune next ball when the impressive McClenaghan fails to accept a sharp return chance to his left. The first two overs of the batting powerplay have brought just five runs.
4:27pm - WICKET! Bell c N McCullum b McClenaghan 82; Eng 153/4 - With the batting powerplay imminent, England suffer a massive setback as Bell picks out mid-off with a loose stroke off McClenaghan. He played beautifully, but will be incredibly frustrated to depart at this stage.
4:21pm - WICKET! Root run out 33; Eng 149/3 - New Zealand claim a handy breakthrough as Root, slow to set off for a single after being clipped on the boot by a drive from his partner, is run out at the striker’s end.
4:17pm - Bell is really coming into his own now. He drives Colin Munro up and over short cover for four to move to 77. England end the 33rd over on 148 for two, having stepped on the gas nicely in the last half-hour.
4:08pm - With plenty of batting still to come, England will be keen to lift the tempo now. Bell slog-sweeps Williamson through cow corner for four to bring cheers from the home faithful. James Franklin then replaces Williamson and is punted down the ground for six by the Warwickshire batsman!
3:57pm - FIFTY! Bell (69b 4x4 0x6) - Bell late cuts McCullum for two to take England into three figures. Another off-spinner, Kane Williamson, is duly introduced and has an optimistic lbw appeal against Root turned down in his first over, which ends with Bell moving to 50.
3:48pm - MISSED CHANCE - Root, on 10, survives a let-off as Martin Guptill - diving full-length to his left at short midwicket - fails to hang on to a very difficult chance off Nathan McCullum. England are currently dealing exclusively in singles.
3:38pm - Joe Root picks up his first boundary, but it’s a streaky one as a bottom-edged pull drops short of Luke Ronchi and runs past the wicketkeeper. England could do with another substantial partnership if they are to set up a base from which to accelerate.
3:27pm - WICKET! Trott lbw McClenaghan 37; Eng 69/2 - That’s not what England needed. After looking assured en route to 37, Trott plays across the line to a full ball from McClenaghan and is trapped lbw. Replays show that was only just clipping off stump, so Trott may feel a little hard done by.
3:25pm - McClenaghan, who gave up just two runs in his opening three-over burst, returns to the attack and draws slightly unconvincing strokes from both batsmen. The first sighting of spin follows as Brendon McCullum calls on brother Nathan. His first over passes by quietly.
3:14pm - Trott brings an end to a brief lull by clipping Southee through midwicket in elegant fashion. It's time for a drink, with England 61 for one from 16 overs.
3:09pm - A crunching pull by Bell yields two and brings up England’s 50 in the 15th over. The opener drives Franklin’s next ball over mid-off for four and England will be content with their progress following that sluggish start.
3:01pm - After a tight over from James Franklin, Bell almost plays on when defending off the back foot against Mills. Franklin gets away with a subsequent full-toss as Bell fails to split the off-side field, but the left-armer is not so lucky later in the over when Trott dances down the track and plays a lofted stroke down the ground for four.
2:47pm - Trott pushes Mills down the ground to register England’s fifth four and the mandatory powerplay subsequently ends with the score reading 31 for one.
2:42pm - Mills drops short, which he can ill afford to do at his pace, and is pulled to the square-leg rope by Trott. Bell then leans into a drive through the covers when Southee errs in line, before picking up four more through midwicket. After scoring just six in the first six overs, England end the ninth with 26 on the board.
2:30pm - England’s first boundary belatedly arrives as Bell drives Tim Southee aerially through point for four.
2:23pm - Line and length seam bowling is proving extremely effective for the Black Caps. McClenaghan sends down a maiden to increase the pressure on Bell and Jonathan Trott.
2:20pm - Not the ideal start for England. They end the fourth over on four for one.
2:10pm - WICKET! Cook lbw McClenaghan 0; Eng 3/1 - McClenaghan nips one back into England’s skipper, who is pinned in front playing back. Cook somewhat surprisingly calls for a review, which proves misguided.
2:08pm - Alastair Cook is a little fortunate not to edge behind when playing outside the line of a full delivery. McClenaghan then sends down a leg-side wide to get England off the mark but the first runs of the bat do not arrive until the end of the second over, when Ian Bell punches Kyle Mills between point and cover for two.
2pm - Here we go then. Mitchell McClenaghan gets us under way.
